A Celebration of Culture: Legacy

When: Thu., Feb. 24, 7 p.m. 2011
Black History Month in Nashville has offered many lectures and performances that remind us about the horrors of 19th century slavery. That particularly ugly chapter of American History has been on our minds throughout February. Tonight, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center will remind Nashville that slavery is not just a thing of the past. Based in Ohio, the NURFC helps link historic sites, libraries and museums to promote research of the Underground Railroad. Another one of their outreach programs is Invisible Slavery Today, the first permanent exhibit that explores contemporary slavery. Representatives from the NURFC speak at The Hermitage this evening as part of the historic home’s Celebration of Culture Series. Discussing the legacy of slavery today, they offer a timely reminder that slavery is not just a topic for history books.
