Considering the way Capitol Hill’s methodically chipping away at Planned Parenthood’s funding, the local chapter probably needs this annual benefit show more than ever — and Gretchen Peters is just the singer-songwriter to play it. Remember that 1994 Martina McBride hit “Independence Day,” about a woman escaping her abusive husband? The one that won CMA Song of the Year? Peters wrote it. And her own folk-leaning albums — 2009’s Circus Girl is the latest — are full of intelligent, deep-feeling female characters who wrestle realistically with very difficult situations. Peters will be joined by kindred songwriting spirits like Matraca Berg, who’ll be releasing her first album in a long time, The Dreaming Fields, a little later this year.
