But on the larger point I agree with the folks in Memphis. Even if you factor out Forrest's postwar involvement with the Klan and his role in Ft. Pillow, the fact remains that he fought for the cause of keeping black people in slavery.

This debate did prompt an interesting thought though.

If the Founders had lost the Revolution, it is very likely that slavery would have been abolished in the Colonies by the 1830s when it was abolished by Parliament.

He deserved to be hanged and to be remembered no more, along with the rest of the Confederacy. I think Reconstruction erred in not shaming the Confederacy and its supporters.
