California has been exporting more food than it consumes or even 'imports' to the US for almost a century, and it's hardly a food desert as a result. It's not unique to quinoa, there being only certain areas of the world that can grow certain foods.

I've been reading about this for years &, like the soy issue, am pretty frustrated about the "right" choice. Happy to support the industry, don't want to appropriate a people's food supply & increase my food miles when there's perfectly good and healthy food nearby.

I don't think Lesley did anything wrong or failed to "check the sources" -- you would expect that the NPR would have done due diligence. But it's true that the NPR article has been thoroughly (and justifiably, imo) skewered -- particularly in the bearwitnesspictures link above.

Global economies are complex beasts, but attempting to rectify wrongs by curbing economic demand is like trying to piss up a rope.

ooh- this urban myth has been debunked: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/commentary/…

We who work with farmers and live in Bolivia and work with Peruvians, Ecuadoreans and Bolivians know that:
1- consumption in these countries has increased, not decreased in spite of higher prices
2- the farmers (the poorest in the country) still eat the equivalent of 3 servings of quinoa per day, a little less than before, but that's because they can afford to add some variety to their diets.

Please check the sources for the articles you get the info from, you will note there are no solid quotes, sources. Thanks!

Chris: I see your point (and I'm a fan of the free market and marketing), but growing food to feed other food (inefficiently) and for a variety of other uses when there are people who are starving and malnourished is unconscionable.
