Yet I seem to recall that academy recruits searched the very garage that Trimble was found in. If no tarp was involved, how was she missed?

Matt Pulle does a great job of summing up the police's theory in his two-part 2001 cover story (written long before the DNA testing cleared Womack):

.....

McElroy remembers Womack saying, “I know who he is; he’s investigating me for a little girl who was murdered with a tarp covered over her.”

The mention of the word “tarp” piqued McElroy’s interest, in part because McElroy did not know there was a tarp at the crime scene. In fact, he’d always thought that Trimble had been covered with a swimming pool.

      >>This tunnel vision and almost cultish belief in his guilt was the greatest botching of the investigation.<<

At the risk of repeating myself over & over again, WHY was Womack considered to be the prime suspect? Did he admit to some sexual shenninghans with Trimble or was there some sort of physical tie to the Trimble crime scene?

I have read many stories in the Tennessean & Scene but none asnwered the above question.
I believe that most, if not all, of the original investigators acted in good faith though, I'm not sure they were totally immune from community pressure to convict somebody- anybody- of this horrendous and, to that point, unprecedented murder of a young Girl Scout. DNA evidence seems to point to the fact that the correct identification of Marcia Trimble's murderer was made following Jerome Barrett's arrest.
That said, please forgive my sweeps month cynicism arising partially from my lack of knowledge re: the circumstances of how Demetria Kalodimos came to "bond" with Jeff Womack.

When I lived in Nashville over ten years ago, I used to read the Scene religiously every week for its diverse and fascinating cover stories ranging from Paul & Linda McCartney's combined business/sightseeing visit into town to a great profile on one of the Vanderbilt Fugitives literary figures, Peter Carey.
