First I saw stats for Veritas Prep in Phoenix. Just 0.3% of the kids in this school (enrollment of 426) qualify for free/reduced price lunches.
The majority on the school board would probably not be on the school board without the money and organization of the MNEA. That is as much a conflict of interest as would exist for any school board member who was elected with the financial and organizational support of the Great Hearts people.

In response to Gast, it is also worth noting that charter schools are more public school that private school.

At the risk of violating the Gresham's Law of message board posting, I'll attempt to answer gast's question: Just do the damn math. When you take the average performance of all charter schools, and you put them up against the average performance of all traditional public schools, you'll find they're roughly the same.

Can we agree that both Great Hearts and the school board {at least indirectly} both have conflicts of interest? Personally I think Great Hearts speaking up on this is lousy politics.
