The Roast Chicken (for two and takes an hour) is a life changing experience at the Zuni Cafe in San Francisco. It comes with their famous bread salad and it was so good, I made two for Thanksgiving one year (Zuni Style) and everyone agreed it was one of our better holiday meals.

I've never ordered a roast chicken in a restaurant, but, if I were in France or Belgium, I would consider it!

A "simple" roast chicken in a traditional continental sense could be very much different from that with which we in the US are accustomed.

Especially if it were "poulet fermier", for example.

I tend to avoid chicken in restaurants where they might be using an industrial product injected with up to 15% of chicken broth, sugar, salt, maltodextrin, etc.

.. that is Not, *at all*, the same as a "natural"* chicken.

* (my own definition; not any industry stereotype.

I thought about this for a while and would have to say this seems like foodie bigotry. There are several dishes that could fall into this category, salmon, steak, chicken, some sort of pasta dish.

If I ever made it to the Zuni Cafe in SF, I'd order the roast chicken. http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/277684 But that's a very special situation.

Properly roasted chicken is a rarity and a thing of beauty, but average roasted chicken is not worth ordering at an occasional visit to a fine dining establishment.

Alexis: Yes, I noted that Lockeland is not necessarily fancy. Also, the $50+ rule needs to be adjusted for Nashville prices.

"At fancy and expensive restaurants (say, $50 and up for a dinner), you can follow a simple procedure to choose the best meal."
lockeland is not even close to $50/plate, nor is it fancy.
