There are a lot of things that are felonies. I think there should be some measure of common sense that a person who went around town writing bad checks and was convicted might not be the same risk as a gun owner as a murderer who probably isn't getting out of prison, anyway.

I support that. I also feel felons shouldn't be getting their gun rights back, period, end-of-story.

Thanks for the link, Min. However, I wish to note two distinct parts you managed to leave out:

1) "Beau Krueger, who has two assaults on his record and got his gun rights back last year in Minnesota after only a brief hearing, in which local prosecutors did not even participate."

Seems to me that prosecutors dropped the ball here & most likely have in many other cases as well, IMO.

      >>why is it, according to some sources, we have a larger percentage of our population locked up than most other countries in the civilized world?<<
Because in many countries they take you outside from the arrest & shoot you on the spot. This saves them time for a trial as well as prison space.

      Ask01,
"How can we expect them to change if they are treated like animals."

Fair point. But in turn, how can we expect people to change their negative behaviors like laziness, inattentive parenting, drug use, or relying on others to provide for them if they are treated as nothing is their responsibility?

"This is one of the reasons I oppose most zero tolerance policies and mandatory sentencing laws."

Zero tolerance policies exist because in their absence there is too much potential for unequal treatment.

Incarceration, once again, should have the aim to rehabilitate and alter a persons behavior when they consciously, and with malice, commit a wrong against individuals, or society as a whole.

That is the price paid for intentionally breaking society's rules.

I have no problem with this concept.

I also concede some individuals are incorrigible, will never change, and have no capacity for empathy, true sociopaths with no compassion for others.

The people I have concerns for are the ones worth saving, who make a mistake in judgement for whatever reason, and can become not only functioning, but contributing, actually outstanding members of society.

The problem I have with the "eye for an eye," "hang 'em, it'll teach 'em a lesson" theory and those advocating such, is the painting of everyone with the same brush, with no regard for the individual.

*I* prefer empathy to be on the victims side, NOT the thugs. YMMV.
"Many blindly, and with no forethought, always declare they would never find themselves in trouble with the law, totally ignoring the fact they don't, and indeed none of us, know what the future holds and the actions we might take in a given situation."
Knowing or not knowing has nothing to do with obeying the law.

It is truly sad that we, as a nation, have lost the quality of empathy.

The ability of higher evolved species to imagine themslves in another place is a quality that has escaped us somehow.

Many blindly, and with no forethought, always declare they would never find themselves in trouble with the law, totally ignoring the fact they don't, and indeed none of us, know what the future holds and the actions we might take in a given situation.

There is, however, a certain entertainment factor inherent in watching a pompous, self centered, self absorbed cretin meltdown when they find themselves in circumstance for which they have condemned others.

Perpetrators of violent crimes need to be locked away so that voting is not even pertinent to the conversation. Those convicted of crimes involving theft of large sums of money, ruining peoples lives, to include businessmen, politicians, and the wealthy who have manipulated markets and economies for their own personal gain at the expense of the general populace, should also be incarcerated for extended periods, also rendering their right to vote moot.

Others however, who made a mistake in judgement, are supposed to be rehabilitated by incarceration, making them into productive members of society.

As opposed to, say a "right to protect the worthless union members because they pay their dues" states?
CA is a prime example of how well a union helps their state & workforce.
