The answer to that question is one of personal opinion. Nonetheless, the way to answer it and make everyone (or nearly everyone) happy is for organizers to make a decision prior to bestowing the first honor.

The fact that few of the honoring organizations bother to perform this basic exercise in a timely manner gives rise to all of the unending criticism that inevitably follows as celebrity media that demands, as it should, consistency becomes increasingly fixated on human frailty.

Having the plaque up is not a free speech issue - of course Mr. Campfield has the right to say whatever stupid thing he wants. That doesn't mean the school has to honor him for it.
