You will notice that I specified "original plan" instead of adopted plan specifically to deal with Representative Turner's point. The original plan in 2001 was similar to the 1991 plan in its focus on placing two Republicans in the same district.

I agree with you, Mark, about the Congressional map, and I would agree with you about the 1991 state house map, but you are wrong about the map from 2001. Turner rightly points out that it passed with only four dissenting votes, and the Dems were firmly in control at that time.

      No-class Warrior,
At each level the 2011 Republican plan is much fairer than any original plan devised by the Democrats over the last 30 years. If the Republicans had been close to as ruthless as the Democrats, there would be some very curious districts and fewer Democratic seats.

The only reason the GOP didn't carve up the 5th District is because there's no way to do it without the map being thrown out by the court.

Let's not give the Republicans any credit for being "fair" or "reasonable" on the CD-5 maps. Everyone with a brain (and no that does not include Teabaggers) knows that if the GOP could have gotten away with slicing the district up, they would have done it.

Meanwhile, Jim Cooper continues selling out the 99% and helps fend off challenges from the left by putting more of Cheatham County in the district.
I think the Democrats can win several of these seats before the end of this decade, just as soon as the people of Tennessee recognize that the GOP agenda (i.e., persecuting gay kids and attacking teachers rather than, say, doing something to improve education and create jobs) is wrecking our state. This map is not so bad for Democrats, and opportunities do exist.
