If you ever take the time to study sexual crimes(and there is a wealth of material to study) you will be so surprised that almost everything you have heard, been told, saw in the media or ever thought yourself is wrong-dead wrong. TV and movies-along with novels to some extent-have ground into people ideas about sexual crimes that is just not true.
Rapist act on impulses of inequality(either fear or loathing) and the climax of the act is control of an individual in which the victim is totally dehumanize and has no identity other than the needs of the rapist fantasy.

Becky, while "If most people are raped by people they know, obviously, they are safer from rape anywhere there's no one they know than they are anywhere there's someone they know" is a usefully provocative thought, it still looks like a fallacy to me, and certainly not "obvious." I think it over-reduces a category of real-life situations to just one factor--"anywhere there's no one they know."

There is no reason on God's earth to make that statement. Why would some SCENE editor let that get by?
The Franklin police did not comment so B Phillips basically knows little if anything about this case.

Naw, Pete, I don't think that's exactly the same, because of the crucial "by yourself" or "with friends." If most people are raped by people they know, obviously, they are safer from rape anywhere there's no one they know than they are anywhere there's someone they know.

It goes without saying that's a pretty shitty way to live, though.

I don't know what the actual facts are, but I don't think this implied syllogism is necessarily logical. It's a bit like saying that since most accidents take place within 30 miles (or whatever) of home, you should never go home.

And more to the point, even if a person does not take Johua's advice and exercise certain precautions, there's nothing in the criminal law that makes taking safety precautions a necessary element of the crime of rape. The person who is raped is still a victim of a crime, whether he or she was being "safe" or not, and he or she is entitled to have law enforcement thoroughly investigate and prosecute that crime.

Such is the problem with rapists--they don't wear big signs announcing that they're rapists. Most of the time, they're people you trust and feel safe around.

You are wrong about the claim that "don't go out by yourself at night" is a superstition: Its a long proven fact that predators prey on individuals - its far riskier to attack someone in a crowd than it is when they are alone. Here's a shocker, convenience stores are robbed most frequently at hours other than peak-business hours.
