this is totally unacceptable how you could give the top earners in the state government an immediate raise then talk about laying off the the rank and file to pay for it this is outrageous it is appalling that you have government workers that perform vital services to the public that don`t receive a living wage and trust me I know because I am one of them. I provide a vital service every day to the general public in a professional and courteous manner and what thanks do we get none we get told sorry gas and food prices are so high but you will have to make do without a cost of living raise for over 5 yrs now no overtime pay and oh by the way we may be laying some of you off really
Tennessee does not work that way. This family would be ineligible here.

Never Fear There are quite a few DHS employees because it is a big agency, and it has numerous low paying clerical positions.

Maybe Haslam is blase becuase he knows all about how states game the eligibilty requirements to get more people on food stamps and keep them there (since the feds are picking up the tab) - creating results like that Michigan lottery winner who was still on food stamps for 11 months after winning $2M.

This article details some of the shennaningans:

http://reason.com/archives/2010/12/10/watc…

An exerpt:

But while the federal government sets these standards, it also gives states the leeway to modify them. Under a process known as “broad-based categorical eligibility,” SNAP applicants in dozens of states are now automatically considered eligible for food stamps if they’re already participating in a Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program.
