I agree with Pete's last point: If we leave all this in the hands of private insurers, we'll be no better off three years down the road than we are now. Well, maybe I don't quite agree with that: In fact, we'll be WORSE off.
I can't help but laugh when I hear Republicans like Roy Blunt today saying that the healthcare system is basically solid and only needs a few tweaks.

I obviously support Jim Cooper, so I'm not a Republican partisan (other Democrats I support include Karl Dean and Phil Bredesen).
However if I were a Republican, I would be enjoying watching the Democratic Party beat up on one-another.
The bill the House majority has put forward was dead on arrival -- absurd. It seemed almost cynical to put forward something that is guaranteed to fail and has turned the health care debate into some sort of litmus test -- that includes provisions Obama opposed as a candidate -- for being a true-Democrat.
As those who follow politics know, Rahm Emanuel was the architect of the strategy that enabled the Democratic Party to re-take the House of Representatives by reaching out to conservatives who could win Southern congressional districts.

"Government mandates and restrictions force private insurance companies to cover all sorts of things that prevent them from offering simple, high deductable, low cost catastrophic care policies that people could couple with health savings accounts to lower their costs."
That more than a little disingenuous Gil: Having some direct experience in the process, I can assure you that health insurors love mandated coverage for this or that. Why?

"This isn't "socialized medicine" -- the doctors won't be employed by the government."
Of course it's socialized medicine. It is the government forcing some people to pay for services used by other people.

I'm an agnostic about Cooper's intentions, but he's right about one thing. In the long run, there won't be any true healthcare reform unless rising costs are contained.

Cooper has a long history of pretending to support health reform, but always finds some little excuse to kill it - always lapdog to the medical-industrial complex. I've always voted Democrat, but have never voted for this devious son of privilege.

In the context of this story, you are implying that Jim Cooper's stance on this issue is based on the contributions he has received from insurers.
Could you please back this up with some facts.

I've had no luck searching for trends of Cooper voting against the insurance industry.
I'm not sure what kind of proof would satisfy in this instance. A statement from Cooper's ofc saying that his stance is indeed influenced by donations he receives?
Ockam's Razor seems to apply to interpreting his approach to the issues.

There was a reason why Congressman Cooper lost his 1994 race for the Senate by the biggest margin (by far) of the three statewide Democrats who went down in flames in that year's Republican Revolution. Universal health care has been a Democratic goal since the New Deal and the Congressman played a role in sinking the Clintons' plan.

"I welcome Jim Cooper's stand on healthcare reform BUT Blue Dog? Was he a Blue Dog when he voted with Gordon and Cohen, 3 of 9 reps to vote for Global Warming??????"
There was an editorial in yesterday's Wall Sreet Journal that examined the actual voting record of the supposedly "conservative" Blue Dogs on Obama's "stimulus" bill, the budget bill, the cap and trade bill, etc.
The bottom line is that as a group they aren't really very conservative at all.
