I liked 3:10 TO YUMA too, and Russell Crowe is my favorite actor working in Hollywood. But for the best this year, nothing touches Samuel L. Jackson and Christina Ricci in BLAKE SNAKE MOAN.

Some of those Randolph Scott westerns made in the 50's are pretty good. I don't much care for those old serialized Westerns from the 30's and 40's like Hopalong Cassidy, though.

With the latest example being the western remake of "3:10 to Yuma".

The orignal had Glenn Ford as the villian.

Both the original and the remake are first-rate—Russell Crowe and Christian Bale give just about the best performances I've seen in a movie all year that aren't by Cate Blanchett. But the Ford-Van Heflin dynamic in the original is just as strong.

Prince of Darkness is waaay underrated—the last shot is one of the creepiest I've ever seen. (Plus you've gotta love a movie set in the church of St. Godard.

Bravo showed that scene (although slightly censored) in its "100 Scariest Movie Moments" marathon a few days ago.

Carpenter's Halloween is infinitely scarier using little more than shadows and strategic framing.

Good director plus gore is a whole other equation, and John Carpenter has me so freaked out by all that open widescreen framing and that pervasive chill that I'm pretty much ready to jump anyway.
