Interesting, since Bruce Dobie is now a champion for the LEAD Academy Charter School- also sucking away resources from our public school system.
While Mr. Dobie (and other rich, white men) are certain that charter schools are the saving grace for our education system research shows otherwise. They consistently have the same, if not more problems, than our current system.
It is not the public education system alone that is failing our children.

BB, don't be too hard on Dobie. Asking Martha to raise money is a solution often relied upon at the BMCC men's grill.

Here's another funding possibility: Why not tax those parents who elect to remove their contributions of time and money from the Metro schools?

My father was a principal for 20+ years in Ohio where the school funding system is truly messed up. Local school systems are funded by property taxes which are set directly by the voters through a series of levies.

You're right about public schools being required to provide services like remedial learning. I really was thinking more pointedly about the discipline system.

Tyson, thanks for your thoughtful comments. I'll concede that the remedial angle is complicated, and I agree that the failings of the system itself do contribute to some of the problems that remedial curricula within that same system then need to address.

While I agree with you for the most part, I think the argument about remedial learning is kind of weak. If you look at the learning system as a whole, the problems that create a need for remedial learning are systemic.
