In todays Nashville Post "permit patrol" comes word that a building right where you were discussing the difficulty of the area residents is being renovated:
Commercial Buildout has pulled permits for the renovation of a former grocery store space at 1125 12th Ave. S., near the intersection with Edgehill Avenue. The new space will house homeless veterans organization Operation Stand Down.

Along the lines of community organizing on this issue, there's an article in the NYT today about food sharing in communities:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/10/dining/10Fruit.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&ref=dining
Although like most of these great ideas...they spring from the Bay Area where growing conditions for so many fruits and vegetables are ideal almost year round. There's no reason something like this couldn't work in other areas though.

Ryan does a good job of laying out the layers of problems that culminate in under-nourished parts of town. There is clearly no simple answer.
It occurs to me that some of the local market farmers who bring their wares into different parts of town might consider these deserts as an opportunity.
We're probably well past the days when a fruit and vegetable vendor could walk the streets with a horse-drawn wagon, which is a shame, in my opinion.

Anyone know of a model Nashville could borrow from in another city with similar struggles?
