My name was taken as an homage to one of Jim Collins's rants. In typical fashion, the rant was a diatribe of vomitus, all-caps words,… More »

Jim? I don't think anyone is asserting that that dynamic, as you put it, exists. I said that the direction from parents to their children - the direction to be polite, respectful and totally clear in your interactions with police - that direction is given by white parents to their children.

The article quotes Pastor Faison saying that this is something terrible that does not need to be done by whites. He is wrong. It is a bad example of the burden blacks have in everyday dealings with police.

I suspect you have live a priveleged life, one where your parents or the adult figures in your life never had to advise you to be deferential to police. Not so, the crowd I run with.

44allin - because this is a local conversation, that's why.

bubbadog - you sure put a lot of stock in one word (although putting it in all caps does make it seem very important). You and 44allin should get together, what with all y'alls desire and willingness to listen and be heard.

Re: “Tough Questions, Frank Answers at Town Hall Meeting On Ferguson

I wasn't at the meeting. I assume the residents in question were able to ask about the War on Drugs; they asked "pointed" questions with unflinching details. The thing about a community meeting is that the community gets to its piece; your intentions for the community meeting are probably well-intentioned, but you are not part of the community. Without an indication that someone was shut down at the microphone, there's no reason to think any topic was off the table.

As for the BABY, well, if you can't see how that is not on-point, I'm not sure what to say.

This, from the article, could use some more explanation -

"declared in no uncertain terms that the ideals espoused by some political leaders don't play out on the ground or in the courtroom"

What, no one asked about ISIS? No one recounted the Manson family murders?

44allin - you must be a joy to work with; always on-point.

Re: “Tough Questions, Frank Answers at Town Hall Meeting On Ferguson

This is a good article and I appreciate that in the thoughts quoted, that there are very few absolutes, indicating to me a willingness to listen, learn and be convinced if the facts or experience show that should happen.

I will say this: white kids get the same talk about being respectful to police and about the 10-and-2 hands on the wheel. The reflexive suspicion of young black males is real and should be addressed. But, don't discount the steps whites have taken to get along with the police (or at least stay under their radar). In fact, you may want to incorporate some of them.
