Beliefs are a poor substitute for direct experience and knowledge - we "believe" in something we have not experienced for ourselves. So, no wonder beliefs are flimsy. We all seek the transcendent experience, whether in religion, or in something else - drugs, sex, food, drink, etc. From my experience, there is something seeking us as well, trying to live through us and calling out to us; whether we want to call this "God" or not - that is irrelevant.
