I know mine is from the civil war because the farm I live on was passed down many generations. The barn wood that is truly antique has a smell if you crack it open. Most smell sweet, like root beer. Most farmer's who didn't sell their farms and handed them down is where your getting this wood. We know the value in the wood, and I have a hard time building furniture with it. Most of the civil war barns are still standing, so It's Very easy to get the wood in good condition because now days its plywood and lumbar.
