Re: “Dean Defends Position on Charter Schools

Fact: MNPS approves charters higher than the national average. And if MNPS continues to open charters at the current approval rate (14 now and 19 by end of year), just the metro portion of the budget to fund them will be estimated at $57 million dollars over the course of the next few years. Slow thoughtful entry of charters into the education market is imperative for our school board to manage. I worry that our city (and state) is also going to try to wiggle out of creating a budget to support these privatization changes. Then where does that leave public school? Fact: elected officials do not want to fund what is needed to make schools better. Which includes resources to intensely work with kids in poverty while not taking away the resources for all kids to achieve. This is not an either / or. We need to be working to make all schools better for all kids. Get behind ALL schools, not just charters.
