As the mother of an autistic child, I tried and tried to get him to do his homework; I even purchased three additional desks so that he would have comfortable places to do his work. While my son pretty much aced his tests, he was never able to complete the homework—his brain was simply not wired for it, and this resulted in poor grades at the end of every quarter/semester until we worked out something when he was midway through middle school. Had I been on "the dole" during my son's grade school years, we would have gone hungry due to a disability that took years to diagnose.
