Re: “No Budget No Pay: Cooper v. Constitution

I'm always amused by the deficit hawks who populate the commentary on local websites. They were all noticeably silent when Ronald Reagan ballooned the deficit with defense spending and George W. Bush did the same with two (count 'em!) wars which were not paid for (along with a tax cut that wasn't paid for). In fact, Reagan and Bush fils were the two biggest contributors to the deficit among modern presidents. But only now, when we have a dramatic recession and a black guy in the White House (and a Democrat to boot!) does the concept of fiscal responsibility become dominant among conservatives.

The Bush Wars and the collapse of the housing market are probably responsible for 2/3rds of our deficit, but instead of blasting Wall Street fat cats and neo-cons for their impact on our country, we want to make it all right on the backs of the poor, infirm and the elderly.

I slightly agree that social programs need to be tweaked, but until conservatives start talking about the need to indict those who perpetuated financial fraud on the American people and who lied to America about the existence of weapons of mass destruction, I don't see where they have much credibility on the debt or the deficit.

Re: “Is the Music City Center the Christmas Sweater of Buildings?

I'd give more credence to Betsy's criticism if I had any indication she knows enough about architecture to fill a thimble. Can she give us an example of a building with better design?

I think the big problem with Nashville is that not enough developers are willing to design buildings that AREN'T Neo-classical, that push the envelope, that prompt arguments. The Sydney Opera House and many Frank Lloyd Wright designs were bitterly panned when they were first built, but I believe the best buildings are ones that people bitch about for about a decade, then fall in love with.
