I make it a point not to be on my cell phone if I am with anyone else in a dinning situation. But I have been out to dinner with my Fiance and have noticed other couples that spend most of the time on their smart phone. I would say the majority of the time unless its a first date situation or some semblance of that, people are on their phone a lot. I don't know if I agree that it's adding 50 minutes to a meal, but I do think that there has become a lot less interaction between people when the smart phones are present.
(On the note about laptops in coffee shops)I'm a professional student that likes to eat and study at the same time, so I don't care for the WiFi-less hours. Although I'm not one of the ones that orders just a coffee and sits at a large table by myself. I think it should be a rule that If you are there during a peak time you have to buy lunch, but the WiFi should be kept on.
