Cash's sense of humor is criminally over-looked. Thanks for this.
"The hardest gobble to gobble" made me have to turn a laugh into a cough here at my desk, which ended up with me choking. Whatever it takes to bring attention to a very worthy cause is worthwhile.
Thanks for that Eartha Kitt selection.
edd: I'd heard that about Calt's bio of James, which is why I haven't read that one yet. Looked up the Patton book just now and apparently a copy of it will cost me anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 as much as Third Man's fancily packaged 800-song Paramount set up there. Talk about fetishizing.
edd, thanks for the tip about Calt's bio of Patton, I'm gonna have to pick that up now.
Well, at least Scene readers who check the comments section will know to read beyond the paragraph about the box, thanks to our debate. Mission accomplished.
And I'll grant you the point about the way the packaging is described. But anyone who knows anything about Jack White knows how important the tangible aspects of such things are to him. He gets off on the details of putting these things together because he believes that it makes them just that much more special and he obviously hopes that others will believe that, too. But beyond those breathless descriptions of the physical components lies the real value of something like this-- Yes, music lovers could go out and hunt down cheaper versions of much of this music. But how much of it would they be able to discover on their own? Without some sort of guidance, probably a pretty small percentage. In one fell swoop-- yes, a relatively expensive and fetishized one-- Third Man and Revenant are exposing them to music that they might otherwise never hear of in their lifetime.
