Re: “Which Comes First? Good Public Transportation or a Public Who Uses Public Transportation?

If you think of public transportation as existing to take a person from their homes to the library or to their work, you have in your head a planning concept that was discarded seventy-five years ago. All development since World War II has focused exclusively on the availability of the personal vehicle to take us where we choose. Trillions of dollars have been spent building our cities with that concept as a given. Consequently, our far-flung neighborhoods and shopping areas are virtually impossible to economically serve with public transportation.

Even if you support public transportation for a variety of laudable reasons--less pollution, less traffic congestion, providing a needed service for poor or handicapped populations--the reality is, you can't get there from here. The landscape we have built can no longer be efficiently served by public transportation.

A more provocative question would be to imagine what alternative system would arise, should public transportation as we know it be discontinued. If public transportation is to remain part of the social contract, is there a better way to do it?
