Re: “Denigrate? Disrespect? Knitters Rise Up to Unravel the USOC Over 'Ravelympics'

Patrick Sandusky is the USOC 'official spokesperson', not legal counsel. As a knitter, business owner and former athlete I could call him something that would be improper for a family site. Someone from the USOC joined Ravelry for the purpose of gaining a list of every member who has made a project that has the Olympic rings, the year an Olympics was held, the initials 'USA', mentions an athlete that has participated in an Olympic event or mentions a sport held in the Olympics. I thought the cease and desist letter was written by Charles Carreon, the attorney for Funkyjunk who is suing The Oatmeal. The infringement isn't about something with a logo that is being sold, it's about items being made for personal use as fans and a fan group watch party. From the USOC letter, it seems they assert that the U.S.Congress has given the USOC world wide trademark of Olympics, the history of the Olympics, the five ring symbol and anything that might sound like Olympics or be construed as being similar or have some of the same letters of the alphabet and any imagery that might be sports like, or be construed as being sports like. As for the Non-Apology version 1 and version 2, well I have only seen one of them and I'm not sure which version it was. It said they didn't mean to insult anyone by insulting members of the site and by noticing the insults and pointing them out the members of Ravelry should be the target of more insults. The USOC web site is only working if you want to make a donation. I've made donations every year to the U.S Equestrian team, I sadly won't be making any more. The wording of the letter and and two Non-Apologies make me wonder if the drug problem isn't the athletes it is probably just the USOC. But then I am a knitter.
