Re: “Two Years Ago Today: The Nashville Flood

On 4/28/10 The Weather Service sent The Corps of Engineers an e-mail marked urgent warning them of heavy rainfall and recommending that they drop the levels of Old Hickory and Percy Priest lakes. The Corps did not read the e-mail until May 1. While their negligence did not cuase the flood it most certainly contributed to it. Additionally the info on how much water they were releasing was 12 hours old so when they opened those dams they sent a wall of water crashing down on Nashville with NO WARNING! I personally watched water that had been pooled and was not rising turn into fast rushing and rising water shortly after the dams were opened. I watched my friends home on Pennington Bend explode and burn while we were both in the home right after they opened those dams becuase of the water that flowed into her garage. Fortunately we were rescued with mere seconds to spare by a neighbor on a jet ski. Gaylords insight to begin evacuating on Saturday night probably saved hundreds if not thousands of lives and I hope they get every penny they lost becuase of the Corps negligence.
