I will also say this about white kids getting 'this talk', I had a black Missouri Highway Patrol in St. Louis County officer in 1991 pull a gun on me because I was grabbing my wallet out of my back pocket when he approached me in my old '72 Buick for speeding. I was late for class at St. Louis University and wanted to speed things up by being ready with all of my info. He gave me a lecture on why to not do what I did because a rookie might confuse my movements as grabbing for a gun and get shot in the process. That lecture helped me to 'grow-up' as much as anything my folks did. The policemen/women want to go home happy, healthy, and safe from their jobs just as much as you and I do, but have a difficult and sometimes confusing duty to abide by with often limited direction/leadership as to how to perform that duty that makes it easy to make assumptions and mistakes. We have to be able to communicate with them as well as have mutual respect.
I thought Mike Tomlinson was the coach at South Kirkwood Technical Kindergarten and Montessori Motorcycle Maintenance Academy? I had no idea he got the Steeler gig!! Oh.. wrong guy.... But in seriousness, I think that the Steeler game (albiet they are obviously less talented as previous incarnations) was going to be a bludgeon-fest because that's been their identity and testament of a Dick "His name is not a venereal disease" Le Beau's defense. I think that this column should be revisited after the Texans game where there is likely to be much more of the playbook opened for a heated divisional rival that is the replacement team in Bud Adams' hometown. If Warmack can neutralize Watts, I think we'll much more of the playbook executed; but with control of the clock clearly in view. It's a marathon, not a sprint right now in the NFL... kinda like October hockey is.
I've been against a military action in Syria; but I think what's being missed in both columns is Obama's backtracking coupled with his initial illusions of where the US stands with our supposed allies in the light of being able to initiate limited military action without any Congressional approval under the War Powers Act of 1973. It's very clear that Obama spoke out of emotion in a very public setting, with regards to the use of chemical weapons, and his uncalculated remarks almost entangled 'Merica into a potentially nasty regional war that could have gone much further. We also have the dumb luck to have Kerry's uncalculated, flippant remarks to allow Putin a pathway to 'solve' the impetus of the current crisis. It's pretty clear that Putin is not really our friend; but what troubles me more than anything is that we had to look for Russia to be the voice of reason to keep our own government from waging more ill-advised wars because of bravado and misreading the world's 'moral versus logical' compass. This is not the 'Hope and Change' the electorate were counting on.
There seems to be something of a malaise settling in on this town's attitude towards the Titans in their current state of operations and I think that there is a general lack of effort in the game day ops at the Titans games from a fans perspective is a big part of the reason. Sure they are at near capacity; but I have yet to hear anyone really that excited about the season. When they came to town, I still remember hearing about the NFL game day experience and liked it in 1999 and 2000. In 2003 it seemed a bit old; but hey they were winning! In 2011, it's old and tired and in need of a re-boot or else it will continue to be better on HDTV. Besides the team's performance, areas like concession options are horrid and overpriced, coupled with the fact that the last time I went, they only took cash at the concession stands on the upper deck w/ ONLY ONE ATM available on each side. Who carries enough cash to afford what concession cost at a NFL game anyway?!? The snippets shown on scoreboard are old and dated (who remembers Terry Tate Office Linebacker anymore?)? These are but two such things which will help keep me at home watching the game on my 1080p HDTV and go to Predators games instead despite being offered PSL's the last three years!
