Cool recap of the Con..Nice work!
Great article, Randy! I was 12 when Star Trek premiered nationally. WSM here in Nashville [now WSMV] decided not to air the network show, but run a "Country Music Showcase" in it's place, not convinced local audiences could grasp the show. I led a campaign of phone calls, letters, and protested until they relented and began airing Star Trek when the third episode was broadcast. Ironically, I was an African American student [a 12 year old 8th grader] at one of the few integrated high schools in the city -- a private one [Father Ryan], all the public ones were still segregated, even then -- and led a multi-racial coalition of fans. It was a joy to see the room at Marriott Gaylord Opryland Hotel full for Nichelle Nichols, George Takei, and Avery Brooks that Sunday afternoon. Thanks for your article and, personally, for your continued friendship.
Great job, Ron!
