Shame on you people for making such a fuss over the spelling of whisky. It is sad that a Tennessee based group of journalists appear to be unaware that George Dickel, a fine Tennessee made product, also uses the spelling whisky. Who gives a flying flip what the NYT Style guide says when a local product uses that spelling.
