Re: “New Winner in the Cornbread Brackets

If you are truly Southern, TL Ferrell is on the money here. Cornbread has only 3 ingredients - none of which is flour or sugar - that's pound cake! The preheated, iron skillet with Crisco is the key to the perfect crust.

Re: “Weekly Open Thread Likes to Stay Busy

In our most recent neighborhood newsletter, we were told that a 12 South Farmer's Market will begin in May. It will be held every Tuesday from 3:30-6:30 in Sevier Park. Yeah!

Re: “Top Chef Tour Same Night as Iron Fork: There Can Be Only One!

Not related, but birthday dinner last night at Margot. Perfection...Cobia and in-season vegetables. Perfect Sancerre. She just keeps the bar where it needs to be. Thank you Margot!

Re: “Weekly Open Thread Passes Along Church's Chicken's Apology

I don't weigh in here often, but I feel like I have to today. I was a big fan of Watermark when it opened originally. I was a fan of Miro District under Joe Shaw. I was a fan of Fish & Co. even though they screwed Joe and sent him to rot in the Hell that was the Blind pig. We went in for happy hour often and made friends with many of the employees. I was ecstatic when they decided to close Blind Pig and relocate Fish & Co. within walking distance of my home. We have been big supporters since they moved in.

Yesterday, management within the restaurant group fired the wonderful bar manager with no notice, and told the majority of the staff they were gone within the week - many of the staff stuck with them through the debacle that was the Blind Pig and many moved with them from the old location. Said bar manager worked his ass off setting up that bar - notice the huge wine rack we watched him hang and fill. They are making room for staff from the Watermark. I can only speculate as to what that means. After being a loyal customer and welcoming them to the neighborhood, I will no longer patronize this restaurant or support this restaurant group. They obviously have no clue how to do business - on many levels. The "James Beard award-winning" chef's most recent additions to the menu are a grilled cheese and a hot dog...really??? The band won't play on on this sinking ship of fools.

Re: “Go Sell It On the Mountain: Sewanee Restaurant News

I know this has NOTHING to do with Sewanee or Monteagle, but I have to get this out...Sunday (2/20) was my anniversary with my man. We wanted to do something different, and Sundays are hard as far as independents go, but we decided to try Giovanni's for the first time. We had a reservation for 7:15 and arrived early for a cocktail. After 2 dry martinis and 2 sauvignon blancs, we received a bill for $51.00. The martinis were made with 350 vodka, which every night of the week is on happy hour at Flyte for $5.00. The sauvignon blanc was Coppola, not even a director's cut. How is this restaurant in business in Nashville? We did not stay for dinner. I have been in the business, I am a diner/foodie/eatie and will splurge, but seriously?!?

Re: “Olive the Fact That Kalamata's is Coming to Belmont Blvd.

Okay, the apostrophe catastrophe knows no bounds and drives me to drink. I just went to the new Fish and Co. on 12th, and on the menu is the section "Specialty's." Specialty what? What belongs to the Specialty? What does it own? Why, Why, Why?

Re: “Weekly Open Thread Got a Shot of Creativity

I could go off on Chcik-Fil-A's practices for days, even they do have kick-ass lemonade. However, the cooking with coke is what conjured up a great memory. When I was in Junior High, I wanted to cook a dinner for my newly-divorced and very sad mother. I looked through all kinds of recipes that my young, non-culinary skilled brain could execute. I ended up making a stove top b-b-q chicken that called for equal parts coca cola and catsup. It was to be low-boiled on the stove. Oddly enough, it was so moist, tender and flavorful. Whoulda thought? I do not recall the sides I made, but I remember that chicken The dinner was a hit and put a smile on both our faces.
