Re: “Mayoral Race Passes 'Awkward,' Steams Toward 'Ugly'

Martin,

You will be waiting a Hell of a long time if you think you will get some consistency out of Pith or many of the posters here.

Were a group of self-styled Evangelical white pastors to have endorsed Fox, we would have five posts from Pith on how this was unacceptable from the perspective of the separation of church and state. Some part-time civil libertarian and Vanderbilt professor might drop by to call for an IRS investigation as to whether any church funds were used in this event.

But I don't expect intellectual honesty from Pith, although I am always hoping to see it.

Re: “Mayoral Race Passes 'Awkward,' Steams Toward 'Ugly'

Tracy,

I would probably have done some things differently. But it isn't my campaign.

A candidate cannot ask tv stations to remove PAC ads. And it cannot ask the PAC to do anything for fear of running into laws about coordination.

If we had unlimited contributions by private citizens, PACs would dry up and blow away. Politics and government would be better off.

Re: “Mayoral Race Passes 'Awkward,' Steams Toward 'Ugly'

Tracy,

1) David denies having any knowledge of the PAC. To have done so would be illegal. You have any proof that he lied?

2) "Radical left" is in the eye of the beholder. I suspect that you think Bernie Sanders is a moderate and that Alger Hiss is an American Patriot. I like Megan Barry and respect her intelligence and public service. But she is radially to the left in her views of the power of government and her fondness for quotas.

3) What attacks? Could those have been merited? There have been some incompetent members of the School Board in recent years. What you see as "attacks" may well have been truth telling.

4) He has libertarian supporters? My God, people who don't want government telling them how to live every moment of their lives support David Fox? Call the thought police that liberals like you seem to think are needed.

By your logic, if Fox's libertarian support is a legitimate issue for opposing him, would Communists for Barry not also be an issue?

5a) What is wrong with being supported by the Police Union? Didn't Barry also seek their endorsement? What if they endorsed her for Council at Large in 2007 or 2011? Why do you hate the police union?

5b) The Caffinated Conservative meetings gave many candidates the opportunity to explain their views and answer questions. Some of the attendees were far from conservatives {David Briley for one} but all were politely treated.

5c) I agree with Fox that the Mayor should have some more influence over the School Board. It is absurd that the Mayor of Tennessee's second largest city/county has so little influence over education. I like the very American practice of checks and balances. In Nashville there are too few checks on the School Board.

6) What Scott Walker campaign? Walker was the guest speaker at Jack Johnson's annual barbecue on Sunday. That was a fundraiser for Jack.

Re: “Mayoral Race Passes 'Awkward,' Steams Toward 'Ugly'

anon,

Apparently there are multiple emails and the phone call. Not to mention the more amorphous 'whisper campaign.'

Are some Fox supporters circulating stupid emails? Yes.

Is there proof that they are part of the campaign's strategy? No.

Why is it unreasonable to think that some of the emails came from Barry supporters? Ever hear the phrase "Who will rid me of this troublesome priest?"

And how is this different from the anonymous posters here who have made wild and unsubstantiated charges against Fox?

Re: “Mayoral Race Passes 'Awkward,' Steams Toward 'Ugly'

Tracy,

You have filled several posts here with wild accusations about David Fox. No proof that Fox is what you say. Just cheap shots trying to make him into a Tea Party Republican, something he is not.

Where is there any proof that Fox is behind this particular email campaign?

Given all the media attention that Barry has gained, why isn't it as likely that her campaign or her supporters are responsible?

As Betsy wrote:

"As for David Fox — whose wife Carrington is also a longtime Scene contributor — if supporters of his are behind this, what idiots must they be?"

The corollary also applies. If her supporters are behind it, what geniuses they must be.

Proof is needed.

Re: “Mayoral Race Passes 'Awkward,' Steams Toward 'Ugly'

To be fair, Jim and Tracy are not faceless. They simply have never provided any factual material to advance their claims that David Fox is the second coming of David Koch, just wild claims based on the fact that Fox thinks we need to be responsible in our spending.

Re: “Mayoral Race Passes 'Awkward,' Steams Toward 'Ugly'

Does anyone have any proof that Fox is behind these rumors? Betsy's "apparently" demonstrates that there isn't any.

Isn't it as possible that some Barry supporters are doing this on their own?

How convenient that Pith posts a rumor as fact and then the faceless trolls show up to pile on.
