Reminds me of a study in the news last week about meritocracy in higher ed, specifically, the possibility that people "think they favor meritocracy but at some level actually have a flexible definition, depending on which groups would be helped by certain policies."
Good that the criminals were shipped out; bad that ordinary people got swept up with them. Hopefully Secure Communities will be a little more focused.

Other similar tactics: quoting poll numbers without naming the poll, and saying that "the American people" are for one or another position.
What I like about David's statement is that it reinforces a few important ideas: that cruelty is out of bounds, that immigration status is not an excuse for target practice, and that everyone who lives in Nashville plays his or her part in defining Nashville.
I guess it was a 2005 threat that ended in 2006...
