Last night's Tribute to Alex Chilton at the Mercy Lounge was a shining example of his influence and inspiration and the legacy that he created, not just with Big Star, but The Boxtops and his work as a producer of other seminal, genre-bending bands (The Cramps and The Gories come immediately to mind). Seeing Jody Stephens on stage playing and singing the songs that I loved for years and years hit an emotional chord. We have our own local population of stellar players, most of whom were represented on stage... Bill Lloyd, Ken Coomer, John Davis, Steve Allen, Hags, Mike Grimes, and our latest addition, Detroit transplant Brendan Benson. With the Big Star music uniting the players and the crowd, that annoying Memphis versus Nashville music scene competition was nowhere to be found. As Jason Wilkins said, Alex and his music made one PROUD to be from the South. To me, the night was defined, and Alex best honored by The Shazam and their performance of The Replacements' "Alex Chilton." Early on in the all too brief evening, The Shazam set the tone, showing us why we were there, why we listen to the music we do.
