A 500-acre Civil War battlefield site along the Stones River includes a visitors' center & museum, Artillery Monument, Stones River National Cemetery & Hazen Monument. Free.
These vaguely hippie-themed pizza restaurants are fixtures on college campuses throughout the Southeast. Nashville's franchise is clean and inviting, offering a tasty product at reasonable prices. The extensive menu includes calzones, salads, sandwiches and a choice of 10 "specialty" pizzas, or you can make your own pie from a list of 30 ingredients (including portobello mushrooms, pesto, jerk chicken and tempeh). The sandwiches are excellent, though Yankee diners will surely balk at what passes for a hoagie. Mellow Mushroom has 22 beers on tap, 40 different bottled varieties and a full bar.
Five Guys serve burgers. Period. Well, OK, hot dogs—but there are no ill-advised attempts at chicken-parm sandwiches or pita pockets or wraps or what have you. They zero in on doing one thing extremely well, rather than attempt many things poorly. Enjoy the free peanuts and the bag of fresh French fries so big it looks like it was dispensed from a giant French fry silo.
The plantation home of the Maney family is the only historic house museum in Murfreesboro. The elegant home was the scene of a Civil War battle & presidential visit & reflects the lifstyle of the antebellum South. Hours: 10 am-4 pm Tues.-Sat.; 1-4 pm Sun. $7 adults; $6 seniors & AAA members; $5 college students & children age 6-17, children under 6 are free.
Permanent exhibits include plaques honoring Hall of Fame members, over 3,000 items relating to the history of country music, plus a library & media center. Instrument demos, songwriter sessions, Appalachian clogging, line-dancing, TV tapings, live broadcasts & other events take place at various times. Hours: 9 am-5 pm daily (except closed Tuesdays through March); museum store, 9:30 am-5:30 pm; Sobro Grill, 11 am-2:30 pm; Sobro2Go snack bar, 9 am-5 pm. $16.95; $14.95 sr. citizens, military personnel & students; $8.95 children ages 6-17; free for children under 6.
