The Big Gear Giveback Kick-Off Show feat. Megan McCormick, The Apache Relay & more

When: Fri., June 18, 8 p.m. 2010
The multi-talented youngsters just keep on blowing into town, and none has more talent or a broader musical vision than Megan McCormick, the Alaska native who first made a splash here as the guitarist with Missy Raines’ elegant bluegrass-to-jazz ensemble The New Hip. Turns out that not only is McCormick good enough to dazzle with some fancy flat-picking as a “Daughter Of Bluegrass,” but she’s also an affecting singer, a deep and nuanced songwriter, and a musical polyglot who can rock out too. Her debut full-length, Honest Words (Rykodisc), doesn’t drop until August, but she and her band (including both former and current New Hip bandmates who are equally adept across stylistic lines) will be dishing up some of its strongest songs, like the heartbreakingly deliberate whisper of “Driveway” and the insouciantly poppy “Things Change.” Though she’s young, McCormick’s been working toward this release — and this sound — for a while, and the effort’s paid off. Blackfoot Gypsies and Apache Relay also perform.
