Unlike a lot of contemporary coed rock duos, Johnny Shellhead and Jen Shag — see if you can figure out where their band name came from — mostly circumvent the whole blues-rock thing for a sludgy, minimalist style of melodic garage punk with no frills and little pretense. On this year’s Rumors in Disguise, Shag delivers streamlined four-four punk beats on a stand-up drum kit — no cymbals, no kick — while Shellhead’s heavy, filthy guitar tone fills out the low-end. The two share vocal duties, hollering and singing mostly about real shit — you know, rocking, rolling, that sort of thing. “Rock and Roll Ruined My Life” says it all, really: “Rock and roll ruined my life / when she became my wife / I wanna be a big shot / and it’s all your fault.” It ain’t rocket science. It’s rock ’n’ roll, and Shellshag do it down and dirty and without ceremony. The way it’s meant to be done.
