Better known as the lead singer for turn-of-the-century retro-garage protégés The Strokes, Mr. Casablancas recently decided to stretch his wings and give his best shot at a solo career. His unfortunately titled debut Phrazes for the Young received mixed reviews from critics, and it’s easy to understand why. It doesn’t really sound like a simple “Strokes Lite” record; it’s more akin to a completely new experimental side project. Gone are the days of Casablancas’ gruff New York anthems. Instead, he’s exchanged those for catchy, albeit sappy, synth-laden pop. Sure, it’s a little disappointing, but Casablancas still has something worthwhile to offer, especially if wary fans can forgive his radical change in style. Besides, this solo tour is only perpetuating a disturbingly long four-year break for his band, so this might be the closest thing to a Strokes concert we see for quite some time.
