Re: “Unless Haslam Vetos It, Miscarriages are About to be Crimes

Going back to the TCA, 68-3-504 states the father's name will be included, so very likely the mother's name is already there. Certain circumstances are excluded, so to speak, from HIPPA regulations. Writing out a death certificate would be one of them. This falls under "vital records." TCA 68-3-504 (c) contains the phrase "when inquiry is required" but it doesn't specify what triggers an inquiry. There are likely rules or regs somewhere out there for an intrepid soul to investigate.

Re: “The State House Will Not Apologize for the Sins of Its (Great, Great, Great) Grandfathers

Brother John, there cannot be reparations, nor apologies, because, as many very, very smart conservative commenters have pointed out, Africans sold the slaves to us! That means that we were not responsible! We didn't go over and steal the slaves! They were given to us! And it gave those people the blessed opportunity to come to the greatest country in the history of the universe! Well it was the greatest nation, until Nobama came along!

Wow, I've never seen that 1963 TV footage! Weird how they played their own outro music over the credits too (kind of a 'From Me To You' vamp). Thanks for posting this!

Re: “Proposed Charter Amendments Include Shrinking Council, Clarifying Fairgrounds Situation

"I think we, the voters, were pretty damn clear on this: Protect the Fairgrounds and it's existing activities."

I am not so sure that's true. But something needs to be done--either fix it, or kill it, but do something already. Entropy is creeping in.

Re: “In the wake of suspected pedophile Elliot Lash's suicide, his wife tells her story

I feel the utmost sympathy for this woman. Most of all she is a victim of the pervading and damaging idea that we are all good underneath....and that we can all change and that we all deserve forgiveness. We are not, we cannot and we dont. This idea is how millions are abused by parents, step fathers and family friends.. I enjoy an adult but exotic sex life and I'm fed up with paedos invading it with their harmful filth....it is NOT OK to role play as kids...it feeds a perversion that is bad for everyone....I am pro consensual sex and role play....but not when it involves kids like this...you'd be surprised at all the young people and women who are into this......

Conservatives have such contempt for pregnant women, especially if they're poor.

Re: “House Democrats Planning Shenanigans...And They're Brilliant

So the body's dismay about a federal court properly applying the law is going to cause them to spend time on the (probable) last day of the session passing a meaningless resolution instead of doing something, anything, useful.

The whole purpose by Joe Carr is to get something he can point to in his rapidly sinking campaign for the Senate. Soon, he will be nothing but a gum-chewing bad memory.

Re: “DA Candidates Answer Extensive Questionnaire

Thank you so much for posting this; it was indeed interesting reading.

And thanks to Daniel Horwitz for posing the questions to the candidates in the first place. These are issues that are very important to Metro.

Re: “Unless Haslam Vetos It, Miscarriages are About to be Crimes

Mark Mays, does the requirement that doctors report "fetal deaths that fall within certain parameters" include the name of the mother? If so, wouldn't that violate her right to privacy?

Re: “The General Assembly Decides Rape Victims are Too Expensive to Help

yoyo, so what? Until you added your comment, race was not part of this discussion.

Rape isn't a crime dependent on someone's race. Rape victims, wherever they live, whatever their race, deserve closure and justice.

The more the government tries to control the life and body of WOMEN....The more domestic violence will be directed toward them...In an attempt to control them....

Re: “House Democrats Planning Shenanigans...And They're Brilliant

If only they'd added an "adds the following statement: Whereas Joe Carr cannot help but finding girl-on-girl marriage super-sexy, man-on-man marriage is super-icky."

Joe Carr: On the Wrong Side of History, Again.

Re: “Unless Haslam Vetos It, Miscarriages are About to be Crimes

What Sue Miller said.

Though, as is common, the headline of this post is sensationalistic and inaccurate, which makes it seems as though every woman in the state who has a miscarriage will automatically have committed a crime. A perfectly reasonable case against this stupid bill can be made without resorting to false statements. It's like saying "car crashes are crimes" instead of "car crashes that are caused by drunk driving are crimes".

Also, the chances are about zero that any prosecutor would go after a "powerful" woman who had a miscarriage, since the "powerful" tend to have powerful friends and powerful lawyers.

But again, Sue Miller nailed it.

Re: “Unless Haslam Vetos It, Miscarriages are About to be Crimes

Let's see, there was a jump between drug addicted fetuses to powerful women being arrested for a miscarriage. Hmmm..... Then there was the bit about rape victims being so devastated they turn to drugs.... I smell Pullitzer.

Re: “Unless Haslam Vetos It, Miscarriages are About to be Crimes

insolent, IIRC medical pros are required to report fetal deaths that fall within certain parameters. I don't know that there is any mechanism within law enforcement that triggers an investigation when someone reports such an event. Just seems like really bad law that places an undue burden on women. You've just had a miscarriage and les gendarmes are knocking on the door hours later? Thafug?

Re: “Open Carry Doomed Because of Memphis?

I was born and raised in Memphis, graduated from a Memphis City School, even lived downtown for 2 years after graduating college, and was never the victim of a crime. I must just be so intimidating and scary that all the gangbangers didn't dare attack me. Or maybe, just maybe, Memphis isn't as bad as everyone east of Shelby County likes to pretend it is to make themselves feel better.

Also, let's not ignore the fact that when people in Nashville say they don't like Memphis, what they really mean is they don't like to be around that many black people. It's the same reason they never go near TSU.
