Re: “Tennessee's Stiff-Arm Is an Outstretched Hand

also, how many times do you clowns have to be disabused of this Obama phone myth?

just maybe try getting your news from somewhere other than FOX or talk radio, just once. you're welcome to factcheck the things you hear that might make you uncomfortable.

Re: “Tennessee's Stiff-Arm Is an Outstretched Hand

ok xray, make up your mind. either Romney paid all of his taxes, or Reid had his 'zomg IRS spies' determine that he, in fact, did not. you dont get to have it both ways.

Re: “Tennessee's Stiff-Arm Is an Outstretched Hand

"And what did your lord and savior do about that?"

As far as I know, Jesus Christ has not done anything about it. He's more concerned with feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, freeing the prisoners, tending the sick and otherwise doing those needful things that conservatives reject when it costs an extra penny.

Cleveland Plain Dealer is also covering it because Cleveland suburb Westlake is home to arch rival TravelCenters of America.

Re: “Tennessee's Stiff-Arm Is an Outstretched Hand

Adam, the map is about *federal aid,* which doesn't include all federal spending. Defense and Social Security aren't considered federal aid. For example, in 2010 the federal government spent about $650 billion in federal aid -- things like farm subsidies, transportation projects, environmental programs -- while state budgets totaled about $1.5 trillion.

And all those suburbanites benefit heavily from an interstate system that provides them access to their jobs in Davidson County, and from Davidson County infrastructure. Take a look at the roads on any weekday morning to look at commuting patterns.

Re: “Tennessee's Stiff-Arm Is an Outstretched Hand

"Ge, Verizon and many others have had several years in which NO taxes were paid---filthy welfare slackers!"

And what did your lord and savior do about that? Why, put the head of GE on his "jobs board," paid him a fat stipend, and then never met with the board.

Way to go! Hooray for Obama! Let's give him a third term, because he's doing so well!

Re: “Tennessee's Stiff-Arm Is an Outstretched Hand

OK. So? It used to be in Orlando, which is somewhat closer to an ocean, but it's still pretty tough to get a submarine there.

That does not in any way change the fundamental fact that if you want to actually look at the data honestly, you'll deduct Social Security spending (since that's allegedly money that is being returned to "investors") and military spending. Furthermore, if you're REALLY bored, you can break this down to Congressional districts, and what you'll find is that rural and particularly suburban areas are the payers and urban areas are the "parasites," as Tom put it. You can see that in some basic common sense just looking around: anyone with one eye and a grain of sense can see that Williamson County ultimately winds up paying to support Davidson County, for example.

Re: “Nashville Symphony Musicians Issue Statement Ahead of Contract Negotiations

Stopping payments seemed unethical. Admittedly, I'm unfamiliar with high finance, especially at a scale of $80-120 million dollars.

I'm a season ticket holder and am no fan of Bank of America. When the Schermerhorn was built, NSO agreed to pay back what they owed. The bank is a business, not a charity.

The flood was unfortunate. I live in a neighborhood that was flooded. My understanding is that FEMA provided some financial relief, but why did they have no flood insurance? I haven't seen a solid figure to quantify the total financial impact of the flood.

At any rate, the Symphony is losing money. Here is a link to their financial statements. You can click the "View Financial Details" link near the bottom of the page, and then look at the 2012 downloadable forms on the subsequent page. This will show a recent 2013 audit.
bit.ly/1abPZ7Z

According to the audit, "The Association owns a viola and cello, with a cost of $1,975,000." That's a large sum, but a small percentage of what they owe. Minimum musician salaries are $60K (http://bit.ly/12K4fDi). It doesn't seem unreasonable to direct 30% of the symphony budget to salaries. Most school districts spend 80% of their budgets on salaries.

NSO has agreements with other bank sponsors, but none to date have stepped in to bail them out of this mess.

I hope they are able to work this out. Whether you are a fan of classical music or not, this could end up being a black eye on the reputation of Nashville.

"There's not much point in having the Coast Guard or a submarine base in Oklahoma, for example."

But see, the US Navy's nuclear reactor schools in Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Yes Min I was in Cleveland the week after the raid, and it was getting almost as much coverage on the evening news there as it was here.

"It takes years to earn the rank of Eagle, Zoombah.

You can't just show up enough times and claim it. You obviously don't know what you're talking about. Now that you disagree with the BSA's new policy on gay youth, you're trying to smear them.

It's a pathetic dodge."

I am Woodbadge trained and served our local troop for 10 years as an Asst Scoutmaster and Committee Chair. I do know what I am talking about; you do not.

FYI, I know of at least one boy who did the entire program in two years start to finish. I suspect the father did a lot of the work for him and had some connections with the Council. There was only one goal - get Eagle so it would look good on his resume. And if there's one, there's ten or a hundred.

It helps to know your subject, matt.

Re: “In the Case of Pilot Flying J: Keep Your Eye on John Freeman

You missed the even bigger story here, Betsy. The Knoxville News Sentinel is *finally* covering this investigation (although they're still not reporting much on all the lawsuits filed against Pilot). The Cleveland Plain Dealer has been all over this baby for months, because of Jim Haslam's ownership of the Browns, but the News Sentinel has been dodging it like crazy. That may have something to do with the fact that Pilot buys copies of the News Sentinel to provide free to its customers on Friday.

Re: “Meet the World's Worst Visitor to Nashville

Since the Clampetts were obviously fictional (IMHO Hew Haw did more damage), what does it really matter? Northern concepts of Southerners is immaterial due to the fact that through our actions and those of our esteemed representatives, the current (GOP dominated) Krazed Klown (state) Kongress we do nothing to heighten Tennessee's reputation!

Nixon removed himself to avoid impeachment for conspiracy to commit burglary, violation of civil rights, and various election law offenses! Such crimes and bad acts are NOT limited to Democrats you douche, need I mention Lewis Libby, Karl Rove, Scott Block, Richard J. Griffin, Lawyergate, the Bush White House e-mail controversy, Jack Abramoff, 2003 Invasion of Iraq, Yellowcake forgery, Bush administration payment of columnists with federal funds to say nice things about Republican policies, NSA warrantless surveillance (keyword warrantless)..................really now need I go on? And this was just under BUSH II ! Selective memory and history revisionism is the hallmark of your arguments, along with IMHO occasional bigotry and hatred.
