Re: “Bob Corker and Donald Trump: A Continuing Love Story

All true, FT. No argument. But, still, in Trump World, this was one of his better press conferences. You don't have to like him to recognize that.
More importantly, there is the larger issue of why the Brits voted as they did, which Trump and Corker may understand better than we do.

Re: “Jack Daniel's Starts to Look Back on Its History With Slavery

Yoyo, take some Advil for the butt hurt and pay attention. Nobody said you were supposed to feel guilt about slavery. The issue was Bill Bernstein's apparent contention that slaves could not have taught whiskey distillation because there were early distilleries on Staten Island. Ya boy seemed not to realize that there were slaves throughout the length and breadth of the American colonies back in the day.

As to your own suggestion that slavery was only rather peripheral to Southern society, since only a minority of Southerners owned slaves: The slaveowners were far from the only ones who benefited, economically and socially, from the system of chattel slavery and racial subjugation.

Re: “Bob Corker and Donald Trump: A Continuing Love Story

Henry - Let me spell it out for you. In the context of working stiffs like myself who lost a large chunk of their 401k because of this vote, (And the fun continued today) Trump can't wait to find a camera and brag about how much fucking money he's going to make.

And then there was the nonsense about what a prognosticator he is, which means nothing considering he didn't even know what the fuck BREXIT meant 2 weeks ago. Jeez, International man of finance talking out of his ass AGAIN!!

That's exactly what pisses-off people who actually work for their savings and then hear Trump indulging in his memememe bullshit. What a fucking narcissist nimrod.

Re: “Jack Daniel's Starts to Look Back on Its History With Slavery

"I didn't have anything to do with slavery and so I refuse to accept responsibility or feel guilt about it."

There was an episode of "All in the Family" where Archie told Sammie Davis, Jr. in a very serious tone, "I want to tell you that I was always dead set against slavery".

It's nice to confirm that yoyo is not as enlightened about race as Archie Bunker.

It's champagne mango season and I reveled in my mango salsa with several meals. I usually enjoy it with grilled chicken or fish, but I also had a sizeable portion with some enchiladas and rice. Man. So good.

Re: “Jack Daniel's Starts to Look Back on Its History With Slavery

@bubbadog: During colonial times we were British subjects. Slavery in the North was abolished withing twenty-three years after the Revolution and even in the South, according to my memory, only ten percent of the people owned slaves. I didn't have anything to do with slavery and so I refuse to accept responsibility or feel guilt about it.

While we're on the subject of race, if we're going to have the picture of a black woman on our currency, how about Vanessa Williams?

Re: “Jack Daniel's Starts to Look Back on Its History With Slavery

I remember working on an anniversary piece for Jack Daniel's some years back and learning that Mr. Jack probably learned how to distill whiskey from a slave. I didn't exactly have to dig to find it, and the JD people weren't trying to keep it a secret.

Is this only a news story because it was news to a NYT reporter?

To Betsy's concluding point: Yes, we need to learn how to talk in a more historically educated way about slavery in Tennessee. We need to do better talking about it everywhere else, too.

Bill Bernstein, you do realize, I hope, that there were African slave on Staten Island and throughout NYC during the colonial period, yes?

Oh man, Brother Yoyo just saw my post and texted me! When I said that he was awesome on Friday night, I meant that he was great in the strategy session, that he had a lot of great ideas about how to stop The Hildabeast! There was nothing romantic about it! So if any of you libtards got the wrong impression, get your minds out of the gutter!

Exactly Brother Yoyo! The Lamestream Media, what are they for?!! And hey, good stuff Friday night! You were awesome!

I can't believe that Trump would be flirting around with RINO Bob! He needs to drop him like a lead balloon and soon, otherwise people will start questioning his judgment!

"Trump could say he has financed and found the cure for cancer and it would received negative press."

Because, like everything else that comes out of his mouth, it would be a lie.

Zoombah thinks he's making a point but doesn't have any facts so his sarcasm is just an empty insult. This is not news--this is every comment Zoombah makes.

Re: “Bob Corker and Donald Trump: A Continuing Love Story

Henry Walker may be your canary in a coal mine.

Resurrecting an IABT Classic:

Henry Walker, proving Instapundit prescient on the coming preference cascade? Of course, he's so far left that Hillary is a fait accompli for him, but not everyone is so, ahem, constrained in their thinking ways.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2016/02/25/donald-trump-supporters-brexit-preference-falsfication-2016-primaries-column/80856410/

It used to be, of course, that the lower and middle classes were stuffy and constrained by social convention while the freethinkers at universities and in the ruling class got to experiment with unconventional ideas. If their experimenting got enough success, then it might eventually filter down to ordinary people. (The sexual revolution worked this way, more or less).

But now it’s our ruling class that is hidebound by political correctness, and it takes movement by the masses to give it permission to express a controversial view. That’s a major change, and it’s one that the ruling class isn’t likely to appreciate much. But having subjected itself to the chains of “acceptable” opinion, what can it do?.

Re: “Bob Corker and Donald Trump: A Continuing Love Story

I just read the whole transcript of Trump's press conference in Scotland and then watched Corker's interview. Thanks for the links.
I'm hardly, of course, a Trump supporter and regret that Britain voted to leave the EU, but I didn't see anything in Trump's press conference that warrants the condemnation he has received. Whether one agrees or not, what Trump and Corker said (Corker said it better) about the larger message in the Brexit vote and its long-term implications for the West, is important and needs to be thoughtfully considered. Instead, my fellow Democrats have all swallowed the narrative that Trump's Brexit press conference was another self-inflicted wound. I doubt if any of them has actually seen the conference or read the transcript. Corker, on the other hand, was there. His assessment of Trump's performance was spot on.

Good news, fellow conservatives! TARP laws got the fuck shot down today by SCOTUS! A victory for individual freedom and bodily autonomy! Let's get Merrick confirmed NOW before Killary gets a chance to nominate a real liberal!
