Re: “The Skinny on MNPS' TCAP Scores

Having MNPS students get MTA bus passes opens up more school choice to students, including charter schools (MNPS does not provide transportation except to zoned schools).

When my kid was in middle school (she graduated in 2014), it was 5-8, and I don't know how much before that it was going on. And, while the grades were pretty much segregated, it still seemed like there might have been too much developmentally being asked of the youngest ones.

When I was in school, it was K-6 in elementary, 7-9 in junior high, and 10-12 in high school, though some districts were alternating to a 6-8 middle school and 9-12 high school.

Re: “The Daily Links: Jon Bon Jovi, Guardians of the Galaxy, and the Gambler's Fallacy

This is an inclusive group. I wish it were more. Blacks unfortunately are not part of the group. How much better off would all of us be if we had a strong and independent black population recognizing the importance of family work and education; patricularly able to vote for a Repub or Dem without looking to the left and their greedy preacher for money, indeed for everything. Get off the liberal plantation.

You know conservative blacks are vilified and driven off campuses. Would they not be better off if some radical professor was afraid to do this? I wander a bit.

Re: “Cook it Caveman-Style with the New Paleo Grilling Cookbook

The biggest factor in your statement is MODERN MEDICINE. Had nothing to do with eating simple unprocessed food, unless you count:
1. Hunting risks like Chris mentioned.
2. Still working through the early process of elimination with plants, which we typically don't have to worry about (with books and the internet to identify bad plants)

I really dig paleo, but in today's world it can be tough to follow strictly. I have found and used plenty of paleo recipes, all of which have turned out amazing. Can't wait to try the recipe above.

Well, you do have to factor in sabretooth tiger, wooly mammoth and mastodon attacks plus childbirth in a cave into those life expectancy statistics, Tobin.

Re: “The Weekly Open Thread: Restaurants and Smartphones

I usually do one thing with my smart phone at a meal, which is take a picture of what I'm eating. But only if I'm at a new restaurant or having a meal that's beautifully plated or a meal I want to remember. My friends have pretty much grown to expect this and some will often wait and ask if I want to take a picture of their plate, too.

In terms of doing anything else on my phone, I rarely ever have it out during a meal. If I'm at a casual coffee shop meet up or lunch with girl friends, we'll usually all pause to take a break and post to Twitter or Instagram, and it's understood. Dinners, though, my phone usually stays in my purse or pocket once my photo's been taken. I never interrupt conversation to play or browse on my phone.

Husband and I had a friend who *always* had his phone out, face up during meals and would constantly read texts that came through, sometimes replying to them, while we were talking with him! Notice the key word here - "had".

When I'm solo, I usually bring my kindle and read. A nice, short mini-vacation of sorts.

Prag, I could not resist the urge to remark on lesbians in the upper ranks.

See, along with her wife:

Re: “The Weekly Open Thread: Restaurants and Smartphones

I can't remember the last time I took my phone inside with me. Usually my wife will have her's if the kids are not with us (in case the babysitter calls), but if we're out with a group of friends we're usually having too good a time to use a cell phone.

Had a great sandwich at Bella Bakery this week, the Havana. Bella could fill in for the long line and little longer drive it takes to get to Mitchel's.

"The people do not seem to be buying the notion that they hate brown people."

Are we talking about your people, johntherevelator's people, or some other people? Is it possible that we could realize and agree that there are just "people", without the need to demonize and separate other groups?

"a military run by lesbians"

Once again, we see there's not a prejudiced bone in your body.

"Eating food in its most simple unprocessed form like our ancient ancestors did seems like a good idea"

No, no it doesn't. Why would you ever adopt the eating habits of persons who died before they reached 35?

Re: “The Weekly Open Thread: Restaurants and Smartphones

Funny you mention this. For lunch this past Saturday, I dined at Monell's in Germantown where a strict "no cell phone" policy is in place. Seated at the big table in the front room, it was remarkable how people genuinely interacted with each other partially because of the setup of family style dining, but the added absence of cell phones sitting out to distract us from the food and conversation certainly should get credit as well.

I've been guilty in the past of having my phone too handy in dining situations, but I'm making more of an effort to put it away and keep it out of sight so I can be in the moment with the person I am sharing a meal.

Re: “The Weekly Open Thread: Restaurants and Smartphones

If I'm solo then I'll be on my phone. If I am with someone else, especially if it's just one person, I make a point to put the phone away. I don't think it slows table turnover. That just doesn't make sense. When I'm on my phone the most at restaurant I'm alone and I usually eat pretty quickly in that scenario.

@fancycwabs I know some shops are trending towards this. Fido, for example, has started shutting off it's wifi during peak meal times and I don't think they have it turned on during the weekends at all. I don't mind the trend. I don't like going to a coffee shop and being treated like I showed up to someone's personal work space uninvited.

Fear and loathing at PITW

yoyo is fine. I wish G Martin would return to do some salt rubbing.

The nervousness here about November is fun to see; it will continue and if there is a big Repub landslide? Well, I can't wait to see the analyses by the regulars here.

DJIA fell 300 yesterday. Disasters overseas with an incompetent sitting in the WH surrounded by boy helpers and a military run by lesbians. And, then there is the southern border. The people do not seem to be buying the notion that they hate brown people.

I like what I see.

Re: “The Weekly Open Thread: Restaurants and Smartphones

I will usually take a cue from the person or people I'm with. If it's a casual dining/drinking thing and people are all checking their social media, taking pics, etc. I'm more likely to do it too. If I'm by myself I will be on my phone a lot more than if I'm with others, I think that is out of some awkwardness of being alone more than lacking the ability to stay off my phone.

Also if I'm in a bar not so much sometimes but in a restaurant or coffee shop, my phone is on mute or vibrate only. It's annoying if someone's phone is constantly beeping, whistling or ringing in a space where others are subject to it.
