Re: “Martin's Bar-B-Que Joint

The smell of delicious pit smoke caught my attention before I'd even set foot outside my truck. This was a good sign. In true "barbecue joint" fashion, Martin's has a really lively and fun atmosphere. I don't think they could have possibly stuck more crap on the walls, although it didn't really feel that junky. I was tempted to make use of their great outdoor patio space, but it was far too hot and muggy for that today.

My eyes immediately zeroed in on the Big Momma Sampler, which the menu says feeds two people. That sounded like more of a challenge than a suggestion, and I was up for it. The Big Momma comes with four ribs, a quarter-pound of pulled pork, and a quarter-pound of brisket, as well as two sides. Hushpuppies were a no brainer, and for some bizarre reason I picked broccoli salad as my second side dish...on purpose.

The broccoli salad was pleasantly sweet, with a good tartness from the cranberries. Pine nuts were a welcome addition in terms of texture. I was also glad to see that the broccoli wasn't overrun with mayonnaise. The hushpuppies definitely looked homemade. They were crisp on the outside with an amazingly fluffy center. Each bite had the right amount of seasoning, too.

As a native Texan, I instinctively went for the brisket first. It had a nice dark crust and a beautiful smoke ring to match. There was also plenty of smoky flavor to go around, though the bark was especially good. A simple rub was all that was needed to enhance the natural beefiness. My slices were lean, but by no means dry.

There were smoke-kissed bits scattered throughout the huge pile of pulled pork. I also found a fair amount of black pepper mixed in, with a decent smoke level to boot. The pork was very tender, but the fattier portions were definitely my favorite. I considered adding some sauce for fun, though it didn't really need it.

I generally leave my ribs for last during barbecue outings, which was difficult since these looked incredible. The third-rack cut apart with ease, but still had just the right amount of bone retention. The juicy rib meat was beautifully pink and was definitely the smokiest of the three. While the ribs were great on their own, the awesome dry rub took things to a whole other level. It added some nice heat, too.

Martin's met, nay exceeded, every expectation that I had.

Peg Leg Porker has been on my to-do list ever since returning to Nashville. It's only a short drive from my office, making it the perfect choice for lunch.

Peg Leg's building is a great setup for barbecue, complete with traditional counter-service ordering. The friendly ladies working the counter were lighthearted and very welcoming. They have tons of awards displayed very prominently in glass cases, as well they should. In the back is a well-stocked bar, which looked like a great option for happy hour.

With no multi-meat combos on the menu (or beef for that matter), I was torn between ribs and pulled pork. In the end, I went with a Pulled Pork Platter and decided to save the ribs for another time when I wasn't wearing a shirt and tie. For my sides, I picked potato salad and smoked green beans.

The skins mixed into the potato salad added a good texture to the mayonnaise base. There was just the right amount of salt and pepper, giving the potato salad a nice mild flavor. The big flat green beans were also a great side dish. I could definitely taste the black pepper here, and bacon always makes things better.

I'm not usually a huge fan of pulled pork, but this looked amazing! There were beautiful pieces of black bark and red smoke-kissed bits scattered throughout. The pork had a delicious smokiness from the first bite all the way through to the last, and it was also incredibly tender. The forkfuls of bark were by far my favorite, especially the juicy, well-rendered fat. No sauce was needed here whatsoever. If all pulled pork was like this, I'd definitely eat it more often.

This was certainly enough food to fill me up, but there was no way I could pass on a peach fried pie for dessert. The sugary glaze drizzled on top was quite enticing. To my delight, the pie was fresh and warmed. Their flaky crust and gooey peach filling were perfect together, and the cinnamon spice made things even better. This was a fantastic end to a fantastic lunch.

I can't wait to come back to Peg Leg Porker and try the ribs!

I hired Pappy's for an event recently. I must say, they are fantastic to deal with. They show up on time and prepared. Their truck is new, clean and not a beaten up junker - no worries about eating food from them or worry about getting sick. They are easy to contact and respond quickly. They are very nice people too. It was good speaking with you both!

Foodwise, Pappys is awesome. The combinations they put together are both unique and delicious! Everyone at my event LOVED them - including me. I will hire them for any other event I do. The portions are big, prices are not startling, and service is great. So, simply put, take a look at their menu - everything is good.

I found several choices for a pulled pork sandwich walking the streets of Nashville. Same for live entertainment. I selected Rippy's because of the music coming from 3 guys playing acoustic guitar that was drifting from the inviting open front. There was a female signing on the rooftop too, but I never made it upstairs. Food A+, service was quick, friendly, music was good, and everyone was accommodating. Perfect choice for that beautiful Sunday afternoon.

I've been dying to try out Edley's since we moved back to Nashville a few months ago. I had some errands to run in town this morning, so I took the opportunity to add barbecue to my to-do list.

Edley's is in the up-and-coming 12 South neighborhood of Nashville, which I think was mostly just residential when we lived here eight years ago. The atmosphere is a good combination of modern and rustic. It's a lively place with a full bar, so I might be back for happy hour sometime soon. The line to order had nearly doubled within a few minutes of my 11:30 arrival. Clearly this joint is a local favorite.

I don't normally do barbecue sandwiches, but Edley's Tuck Special sounded too good to resist: a brisket sandwich with house made spicy pimento cheese, an over-easy egg, red and white barbecue sauces, and pickles. It doesn't get much more Southern than that. Well, I suppose they could have added a fried something-or-other, but I digress. I decided to make my Tuck a combo with potato salad and mac-n-cheese on the side.

The mayonnaise-based potato salad was very tasty. Skin-on potatoes were a good choice. There was much more potato than veggie in the mix, which worked well here. The macaroni was far from basic Easy Mac. I really enjoyed the crumbly topping and spices. It was gooey and creamy from the various cheeses they use, and was much better than the mac and cheese I usually find in my barbecue travels.

It was hard to decide exactly how to tackle the towering Tuck Special, so I assembled a pile of napkins and dove right in. Wow, this sandwich was deliciously complex! I managed to find a few bits of plain brisket, which had a great smoky flavor as well as a slight spiciness. The meat was very tender, due in part to the fattier slices I received. Edley's pimento cheese comes out almost like a patty and definitely has some heat to it as well. The addition of the mayo-based white barbecue sauce was really interesting, while the pickles added acidity, sweetness, and a much-needed crunch. I wasn't sure how the egg would play out, but it actually tied everything together beautifully. This sandwich was incredible all the way around!

I'll always be a sucker for the classics, but Edley's proves that barbecue doesn't necessarily have to be simple to be amazing. I will definitely be back to sample their more traditional barbecue items.

I caught the scent of delicious hickory smoke wafting through the parking lot. This was a good sign. I "checked in" on Yelp and received an offer for "1 free Hand Rub." Despite the obvious and hilarious double entendre, I declined the offer. I prefer to make my own rubs.

After a quick perusal of the menu, I decided to make my 3 Meat Combo a true cross-section of America: Tennessee pork shoulder, Texas beef brisket, and St. Louis pork ribs. For my two sides, I picked potato salad and mac & cheese. Their combos also come with either cornbread or toast, which is a no-brainer of a decision.

The mac & cheese was creamy and cheesy, but nothing special. The potato salad was slightly sweet, with just enough mustard to help the taste without being overpowering. Their cornbread has a flaky consistency similar to pound cake, and was equally as sweet. This was a great palate cleanser in between the side dishes and the main event.

I ended up with a leaner cut of brisket, which despite my fears was actually very tender. My slices had a dark black crust and a deep red smoke ring. The flavors were really nice, and there was plenty of smoke. It wasn't quite the Central Texas brisket I hoped for, but it was still very good.

The pork shoulder had a nice smoky hue and lots of bark mixed throughout. The meat was tender, but bordering on mushy. The bark packed the most flavor, though the rest also had a nice taste. There was a decent amount of smoke here too.

Their St. Louis ribs had a good crust and a decent smoke ring. They weren't as meaty as I would have liked, but the flavors were great. Each bite had ample smoke, although some coarse black pepper would have made the crust even better. The meat was tender, succulent, and juicy, but not falling off the bone. And yes, that's a good thing.

Surprisingly, the pulled pork shoulder was my favorite part of this meaty trio. I usually find myself unimpressed by pulled pork, but Jack's proved that any meat can be fantastic if you know how to smoke it.

Downtown Nashville is an awesome place for live music, but surprisingly there aren't just too many barbecue joints to pick from. Jack's has a prominent place on Broadway (Nashville's main drag), and although their 'que is delicious, the line usually stretches halfway to the Cumberland River. I found Rippy's across the street and hoped it would be good, too. Fingers crossed.

Not to be outdone, Rippy's had live music going tonight. The old 90s country was actually really good. Nashville is the kind of city where it's not at all unusual to see folks two-stepping in the middle of a restaurant. All in all, this place had a really pleasant atmosphere.

I ordered a Half Portion Dinner (6 bones) of Rippy's Signature Ribs. The ribs come with two sides, so I picked potato salad and onion rings. The menu didn't specify whether the ribs were wet or dry, but I hoped for the latter.

The potato salad was nice and creamy. It had a great flavor, and I thoroughly enjoyed the crunch from the pickles, etc. I also liked that the mustard base wasn't overpowering. The onion rings looked fresh rather than frozen. They had a great batter and were fried nice and golden. This was an excellent pick for a side dish.

Much to my delight, the ribs came with a dry rub. I was able to cut them apart with minimal effort, suggesting that they were slightly overdone. They had a great smoke level, which matched perfectly with the evident smoke ring. My main issue with the ribs was the inconsistency. The first bite was fairly spicy, coupled with just a touch of sweetness. It was also decently tender. Other bites were more bland and weren't spicy at all, and the meat nearest the center was a bit dry. I was surprised to find so many differences in only seven inches of meat.

Rippy's wasn't the best barbecue I've ever had, but it was certainly passable. I'd go back for the drinks and music, although I'd likely order a burger instead.

As a native Texan, Judge Bean unsurprisingly and thankfully gravitates toward brisket rather than pulled pork. A man after my own heart. He is also apparently a descendent of the infamous Texas lawman Judge Roy Bean, which is just awesome.

Part of me was anticipating a counter-service barbecue joint, but Judge Bean's uses waitresses. As I frequently do when dining alone, I saddled up to the bar. The very friendly bartender took great care of me. In fact, everyone I encountered here was exceptionally welcoming. Clearly the staff has been instructed on the finer points of Texas charm as well as Texas 'que.

Since Judge Bean's specializes in Texas-style barbecue, and since I was feeling a little homesick, a Texas Trinity was in order. I got their 3-Meat Smokehouse Combo with brisket, ribs, and sausage, as well as potato salad and cowboy beans for my two sides. I also couldn't help tacking on a piece of their so-called Texas Sushi for good measure.

My Texas Sushi appetizer came out first. What you have here is a jalapeno stuffed with sausage and cream cheese, wrapped in brisket. It's kind of like a California roll, except for men. The brisket had a nice smoke ring and was quite tender despite being a leaner cut of meat. I found a great hit of smoke and heat in each bite, tempered nicely by the cream cheese. Good thing I had a big glass of sweet tea to cool things down. The entire thing was absolutely fantastic.

I enjoyed their mayonnaise-based potato salad, which was a nice change of pace from the mustard-based potato salads I usually find in my travels. Without the overpowering mustard flavors, I could really taste the pickles and pimento. According to the menu, the cowboy beans are "not a sleeping partners favorite," so I'll apologize in advance to my wife. The beans had a ton of flavor, and there was definitely some spiciness to them.

The brisket had a deep red smoke ring which perfectly matched the equally smoky flavor. The dark black bark was also extremely tasty. Though lean, the brisket was magnificently tender. What little fat there was had been rendered beautifully. In addition to signifying the proper cooking time/temperature, this also tells me that Judge Bean's truly cares about their product.

Barbecued sausage seems to be a rare find in Middle Tennessee, so the Czech in me was happy to see it at Judge Bean's. The casings were very crisp, with each bite "popping" in my mouth. I could really taste the smoke, which isn't always the case with sausage. This was most assuredly not made in-house, but it was still really tasty.

These ribs didn't have as much of a crust as I was expecting. I did, however, appreciate that they weren't served drowning in sauce. The meat was very tender, but sadly had no bone retention. Perhaps this was an attempt to appease local demands for "falling-off-the-bone" ribs. That being said, they had a nice smoke level and an all-around great flavor.

Next time I eat at Judge Bean's, I may just order up a dozen pieces of Texas Sushi and call it good.

We bought groupons and started off with the fish sandwiches and bbq. The fish was dried out and chewy and the bbq was far from fall of the bone. I was not impressed with the building itself but sometimes you get those "hole in the walls" and usually the food is pretty good. In this case the food was bad and so was the customer service. I will never buy another groupon for this place or personally support them.

Not sure which BBQ place the other reviewer went to but it definitely wasn't rippy's... Service was horrible, I felt like I was imposing on the staff to ask for a refill on my flat soda. I had to drink soda because the beer they brought me was warm. Ribs were dried out and a big let down considering they boast to have the best in Nashville. I never write negative reviews but had to on this one. Open for other suggestions!

Got a groupon for this place.... got bbq plate w/ beans and slaw... my beans had a hair them....right from the start. Slaw wasn't all that good either. It was hot in the dining room, and the tables felt greasy to the touch, and it smelled dirty in there too. Not mention this place is in the GHETTO !!

Wow!! Best BBQ I have ever had. The pulled pork was perfectly smoked and tender, the coleslaw of a flawless consistency and the corn light bread a wonderful compliment to the food. My husband got the ribs and swears he'll never go anywhere else for a better execution AND DEAL; the mess O'greens so delicious you wouldn't know you were eating healthy! With Happy Hour prices that you can't beat offered all day, we will return whenever we crave some southern barbecue DONE RIGHT and cheap cold one to wash it all down :)

Stone House Q puts Hog Heaven, Jacks, Calhouns, Jim N' Nicks, Whitts, and Famous Daves COMBINED to shame! Thanks for becoming a new favorite!
