Re: “The Southern Baptists Build Themselves a Giant Loophole, Decline to Step Through It Yet

What Southern Baptists won't say is that their problem is with gay sex. This is why for years gays in the church were counseled to remain celibate in order to remain "pure." So the water is muddied even more . . . being gay is not a choice, but gay sex is . . .

Megan Barry is in the Shoney Bear costume . . . just waiting for her moment to take over! That is, when the Chamber of Commerce says, "IT'S TIME!"

If this drink is anything like what I got at Shoney's last week, I'll be on the shitter for the next 1/2-hour.

The look on Karl's face in this photo is the same expression you get after taking your first bite of the Breakfast Bar.

Re: “John Carpenter's Halloween? On Halloween? At a Real Drive-In?

That's awesome. (Way better than hearing John Goodman describe Murfreesboro as "a flyspeck horseshit town" in INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS.) Seeing HALLOWEEN in 1978 was a thrill because it hadn't yet been imitated to death: watching it then, I understood how my parents felt when they talked about seeing PSYCHO when it first came out.

And seeing it at a drive-in? Get outta town.

Re: “Register Flips, Hasn’t Ruled Out Giving Inglewood Elementary to KIPP

""The study found that poor children, particularly African Americans and Hispanics, made the greatest gains in charters while children who are not poor — no matter their race — gained nothing or even performed worse than their counterparts in traditional public schools. Hispanic students who are English language learners also made gains in reading and math in charter schools."

This is true in almost any setting. Keep in mind that "gains" is a normative measure, at least here in a TVAAS state- meaning "gains" are defined by moving students up *as compared to their peers* in percentile ranking. Think of it as a line of 100 kids. So any time a student makes a gain (moves up in line), another has to fall from their place in line regardless of whether or not they learned more. Kids near the top, or front of the line (who tend to be middle class), are more likely to correct towards the mean. And also true for those near the bottom (who tend to have disadvantaged, lesser educated parents) more likely to trend up towards the mean.

The way this state defines student gains (and any who use Value Added) is jacked. It's a statistics shell game, and only indirectly related to actual student learning.

Re: “Register Flips, Hasn’t Ruled Out Giving Inglewood Elementary to KIPP

"So if we eliminate poor charters, the case for expanding successful charters should be clear, no? Unlike charters, it is almost impossible to close underperforming schools." (Charters are as nearly as difficult to close as public schools, however, public schools should be difficult to close in Tennessee, since a free education is a constitutionally-protected right in this state.)

"In a case where public schools and charters have almost equal enrollment, charters are apparently outperforming the traditional model." (this is not at all demonstrated by the study)

"Well howdy. Tennessee? That would seem impossible from some of the criticisms leveled here." (That's not an accurate assessment of the criticisms leveled here)

"So let's shut down more failed charters. Anyone have a problem with that?" (I include this because if you'd paid attention at all, you'd know that lots of people have huge problems when it comes to closing down failing charters.)

"So opponents of charters are placing the interests of unions and Democratic political ideology over the best interests of poor children? No surprise there." (Typical Rogers' BS)
