Re: “I don't have a good reason for not drinking — I have the best reason: I don't want to.

I'm not a teetotaler, but I have about 3-4 drinks a year, which is pretty much the same thing for most people. Sometimes "what do you want to drink" is just a passing question and no one cares/notices if the answer is "water," and sometimes people feel judged by the simple fact that you don't want to drink something with alcohol in it, and occasionally people really will try to force you to drink. It's bizarre.

I'm also a vegetarian, and I have encountered more social pressure to eat meat than to drink. Live and let live, y'all.

Good post.

Re: “Circle Players and TSU's production of Ragtime ambitiously charges forward

This production raised the bar for community theater. I find myself attending community theater performances with expectations lowered to account for common issues of inability to fully realize the acting/singing/dancing requirements of the principles and chorus, limited budgets and limited rehearsal time.

Tim Larson and his ensemble surpassed every expectation. His staging was Spartan, but incorporated innovative, focused design and functionality. The use of movable scaffolding providing full 3d use of the theatrical space. The beautifully detailed 3d model of the New Rochelle house was stunning. As for acting and singing, I wanted to sit there after the matinee performance to wait and see the evening performance as well.

Thanks to Tim Larson, his cast, musical ensemble and crew, and to Tennessee State University, for an unforgettable, and sometimes tearful, afternoon in the theater.

When I stopped drinking I started noticing how many functional alcoholics there are in this world.

I raise a glass of sweet tea to you. I did drink socially, but have lost interest in the activity. I have other things to do and other ways to spend my money. You explained it well.

Re: “Neil Young, Billy Gibbons, Brenda Lee and Others to Appear at Musicians Hall of Fame Awards

A friend of mine was inducted the first year. It was the greatest show ever. George Jones performed, Peter Frampton performed, lots of Motown greats, rock greats, and country greats performed. It was a magical night.

Re: “Nashville Was No. 9 For Guns In Airports in 2014

With this many STUPID people, who don't realize you CAN NOT carry a gun on a plane, going armed in Nashville, I somehow feel a whole lot less secure. Not from criminals but because of mental deficients going armed in public, legal or not. I doubt legal matters to many of them.

Texas Tea: MPD didn't call all gun owners rednecks, just those caught at the airport foolishly carrying. Cool the paranoia, and get the foil hat back on!

Re: “First Bite: The New Listening Room Cafe

I went to The Listening Room Cafe tonight, and the food was awful--greasy nachos with fake cheese and no salsa, unimpressive mac and cheese, while the so-called "house-smoked seasonal vegetables" consisted of microwaved broccoli and carrots with a sickeningly sweet teriyaki sauce drizzled over them. It is 4 hours later and I am still feeling ill.

Re: “15th Annual Country Music Critics' Poll

Agreed LMYERS.

I'm excited to see Sturgill at the top of the poll, but the author's take sort of sucks. Instead of focusing on the bad writing above, though, I'll say why I like Sturgill so much.

Every song that he writes is full of depth and thought. They're not cooked up, and I can actually tell that his experience is being poured into his songs. For example, when I hear his song Panbowl, where he sings about his favorite times of his childhood at Panbowl, which is presumable a lake town that his family lived around, I can't help but fell where he's coming from while simultaneously thinking back to my own experiences in a truly meaningful and unprecedented way.

Further, his ability to cover a song has to be unrivaled. He made The Promise into something that I barely recognized, but instantly couldn't get enough of.

At the end of the day, you're either an Elvis (soul) or Beatles (pop) guy. Sturgill's all soul, which is why I can't get enough.
