Re: “Butch Spyridon: A Man Without a Past

So, by your logic- we should let the hotels make their massive profits until people stop showing up and then when the town is on a really far down cycle we should hope and pray that we can have people visit again. Feast and famine. no middle ground. Butch's job is to complain about the feast, in hopes that maybe we don't have to have the viscous cycle. We know hotels and other capitalists will not police themselves when it comes to looting for their personal gain.

Prices at hotels are not just up by a little bit- they are up by 3 or 4 times. do you think a motel 6 is worth a $250 price tag? $400 price tag for Marriots? we have a demand for sure, but do we have to fail to correct it?

Re: “Butch Spyridon: A Man Without a Past

Here's something only somewhat related though. I like those palm trees on the latest hit mailer against Grant Starrett. Funny.

But let's hear some blubbering here from the Democrats about the working class that long ago wised up and deserted them in that district.

Re: “Butch Spyridon: A Man Without a Past

Your attack comment is totally unrelated, stalker. My comment referred to the hotel rates mentioned in the original post.

Donna took the opportunity in a totally unrelated story to post a slam against immigrants.

I'm shocked.

Re: “Butch Spyridon: A Man Without a Past

I know people in Maury County who have applied for and didn't get those housekeeping jobs in Nashville hotels that the hoteliers claim they can't find American labor for.

Re: “With wine in grocery stores and a new head of the ABC, Tennesseans are optimistic about the future of alcohol in the state

Intheknow is right - the main obstacle to reform in the state is from the wholesalers who have the exclusive right to distribute any brand of alcohol in the state. Jack Daniels - one seller. Silver Oak Cabernet - one seller. Patron Tequila - one seller.

It has always been in the wholesalers best interest for no one entity to own multiple stores or be too large because that would move pricing power from the wholesalers to buyers (store owners and now groceries). The 20% markup is a sop to these guys because it helps to block any type of pricing power groceries may want to entertain - you can't make a case of Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc a loss leader.

That we got WIGS at all is a pretty important testament to the people's voice ultimately overpowering those of special interests. But what a fight it was.

Re: “Butch Spyridon: A Man Without a Past

The hotel rates are going to be higher after their captive, imported housekeeping labor gets the pay they're demanding.

I'm really glad yoyo has his conspiracies to peddle.

Otherwise all he'd do all day is follow me around and call my mother a whore.

That and mock Jim Collins.

What a wretched life.

I can imagine Purcell's bowel movements with that lunch menu each day. I imagine it all the time, by the way.

@notguilty
JR doesn't say Purcell grew up in East Nashville, just that he was a product of East Nashville politics.

Re: “With wine in grocery stores and a new head of the ABC, Tennesseans are optimistic about the future of alcohol in the state

I'm unsure why this should be an overarching goal of the State: "keep the playing field even" between small liquor stores and big grocery stores.

I'd rather the State address the needs, concerns and desires of its citizens. Let the chips fall where they may for business interests. Like the buggy whip.

Without regard to any establishment question, the Twenty-First Amendment permits beaucoups of regulations of alcohol sales.

Re: “Butch Spyridon: A Man Without a Past

Butch is simply reading from the script written by the convention center consultants and used in dozens of U.S. cities. No city has ever met the projections issued by the consultants in order to get a new or expanded convention center paid for with our money (all tax money is OUR money). The reason for the script it to make sure the setup is completed for the next item on the list, usually an even bigger center or another TIF hotel, because there has to be a reason why yet another set of projections were not met.

Butch is actually faced with multiple problems. The hotel industry is booming in Nashville and little of the boom is from the convention center. At most 1-2% of room tax revenue is related to meetings at the MMCC. However, those prices are affecting the center. Room rates are used by businesses (not so much the glorified party planners in the meetings industry) to decide locations. Also the Butches in all competing cities are habitually rebating hotel room rates to meeting planners (conventions are a buyers market and few conventions actually pay for the center space) using a slush fund like we setup for this purpose. The hotels are using way too much of HIS slush fund when their rates are higher and he is becoming irked.

Luckily things are going great in the industry with the smallest economic impact of all economic sectors. Yes we spent a billion dollars to build an altar to the God of part-time work and government assistance healthcare (hospitality). You ask who benefits from the corrections/penal and immigrants systems? It is hospitality; they get labor real cheap because these folks will not be hired elsewhere.
