"The single mom of two had seen her San Salvador neighborhood grow dangerous and crime-ridden. Gangs extracted protection money from business owners; many shops closed. She wondered whether her son, then 11, would one day fall in with the gangsters who lurked outside his school."
I know I should not respond to pathetic trolls like "bobsguns", but how can you read something like paragraph above and then compare them to child molesters? It's highly unlikely Bob even knows any immigrants, legal or otherwise, because if he did, he'd find out that most are sympathetic to the plight of the people mentioned in the article. Most people with real human emotions are. I know quite a few legal, naturalized immigrants and none think like Bob. Bob, just some advice: your commenting history makes you look like an angry person at best, at worst a sociopath. You might want to seek some help.
Christ, folks. That's a pretty solid case of constructive criticism. He/she points out most of the same shortcomings The Spin does, just in a far less forgiving way – I assume because they're not so enamored by the story, they came to see a performance and not "worship" the man in the flesh.
the early Ubu of "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" and "Modern Dance" is among my favorite music ever, but I like most of what they've done over the years. Goose, I will say that I at least regard "Modern Dance" as just plain punk, it was too early for "post-punk" in 1978, maybe...? I got the chance to interview David Thomas in 2006, when Rocket from the Tombs played here. I found him a guy you could really engage.
To declare Williamson County as redneck is an insult to good rednecks everywhere. I would label Williamson County as being populated by a disproportionate number of arrogant bastards in a Don Quixote inspired search of that Theocratic Plutocracy they so lust for!
See, kids, abortion does not, has never, could never, kill a baby. Murder kills a baby.
That metaphor was specific enough as to sound confessional.
But I do think it's time to move the fairgrounds and all that goes with it. I would be sad to see it go, but it is an overall drain, not just on money, but in massive, development potential-rich real estate in a location that is ideal [for me, anyway, not that I have any actual vested interest in this].
On a side note, have you ever noticed that the mysterious 'fork" usually posts immediately followed by zoombah or xray or gast (who is MIA) or another nom de plume of what we all realize is the same sad person!
There is a distinct difference and MO between a serial killer and a mass murderer. Serial killers repeat their actions over an extended period of time, quite often years. Their particular incentives are continuing, reoccurring incidents (triggers). Mass murderers often react during a specifically defined short period of time. In them it can be argued to be a crime of passion where a singular trigger is in part the cause. the only similarity is that people die, and usually many of them.
UBC's would undoubtedly assist LEO's in ferreting out these individuals and removing the ease in which they obtain weapons. The protest of the momentary inconvenience is hardly justified by placing others in a potential situation where such incidents could occur, now is it.
Kermit Gosnell was a murderer for the eternal capitalist motive for business profits. One who would take advantage of a good law, and commit evil with ease. The fact he was discovered is heightened by the fact abortion is legal and regulated, as it should be. Hence the whistle blowers, being law abiding, have a real incentive to declare the situation. If they were in fact involved in a criminal conspiracy, they well may be reluctant to come forward
As far as emotions being involved in public policy, was it not emotion by the public that precipitated the Patriot Act proposed by Bush II, the backlash against the Dixie Chicks after their exercise in foresight and lawful practice of the 1st amendment, the unlawful invasion of Iraq under the mistaken belief that THEY were involved in 9/11 and in response to LIES told by the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Rice consortium? you can NOT condemn one without the other.
Fact is you can not shot someone (or many) without a gun, and if it is determined that you may be a danger to society, it behooves us all to place legal barriers to you obtaining that weapon. There are NO barriers for a lawful purchase of a weapon, other than price!
To declare a 7 or 8 month term fetus the same as a 2 or 3 month fetus is ignorant of obstetrics. The fact that short term fetuses have little to no viability without the confines of the host. This is where the pro life sect attempt to make public policy based on emotions, by declaring everything from a 2-3 month fetus to even a barely viable zygote a "person". They completely ignore their lack of respect for individual sovereignty over ones own bodily function. NO ONE LIKES ABORTION, but I contend the greater evil of biological enslavement by government decree to be the greater evil!
Serial killers are difficult or impossible to predict. Not that many things, other than mental pathology connect them: Manson, BTK, Bundy, Dahmer, and probably a dozen others are just about impossible to predict.
The mass murderers committed with guns are similarly unpredictable, I'll grant. Where we part ways is that you see no reason or benefit in some reasonable limits: background checks for mental and criminal issues, and a lower limit on the size of ammunition feeding devices. Safe storage requirements should be made law, too. These would have saved a number of lives in the past decade, and would cause minimal disruption to responsible, law abiding gun owners.
The guns used in shootings at Aurora, Tucson, Blacksburg and Newtown were acquired legally. The limits I just mentioned would have made a difference in each of these.
Manager is an idiot.
I'm trying to cut as much gluten out of my diet as possible to hopefully prevent my already arthritic knees from getting worse. Have been following Twin Forks locally for a while, but this post + Chef Frohne's note about the Lemon Rosemary bread [what? YUM!] have me sold. Will be finding TF soon and indulging my gluten cravings with their delicious-sounding bread! Thanks for this great post.
"Anonymous" you say you were fortunate to have gone as a guest. I would not disagree with that. I would with everything else you say. You witnessed an artist that is a true gem that until recently was lost in the gravel and dirt of inner city Detroit. A city that is an American tragedy.
I thought his band was fine and I was not expecting Herbie Hancock style precision. Gosh, this is folk music here and he is 70 years old.
Concentrate on the message and vibe and enjoy the legend. I bet you won't find Dylan enjoyable this summer if you are looking for perfection.
What does the woman down the street look like?
zzzzzzzz....
No, I'm with you there Ryan O!
"Kermit Gosnell is a serial killer. Trying to make public policy based on the actions of a serial killer is foolish. There aren't that many of them. How serial killers act tells us nothing about how the majority of people who have superficially similar traits to them. The BTK Killer was a Boy Scout leader. Should we pass policy treating all Boy Scout leaders like murderers? Or, on account of Ted Bundy, should we make it illegal for good looking men to date, since any one of them might be a danger to women? Or should we ban 20-somethings from living together because of Charles Manson?"
Now, apply that VERY SAME LOGIC to Adam Lanza, James Holmes and the like. They are not representative of law-abiding gun owners, therefore the whole "gun control" effort was a very misdirected, flawed, and EMOTIONAL attempt at making PUBLIC POLICY based on the actions of a handful of people.
Next you'll be telling us that there's nothing to the IRS scandal....
"Move along, folks... nothing to see here...."
Rationalize it away any way you can....
I'm just glad everyone now realizes what is growing inside a woman for 9 months is a person.
Re: “Kermit Gosnell Doesn't Prove Your Abortion Point. Yours Either.”
Betsy,
Superb article.
Jim,
I think Betsy is correct about Gosnell being a serial killer. Capitalism does not play into his motivation.
