Re: “Weekly Open Thread — Food Issue Edition: Where Do You Like to Dine With Best Friends?

Urban Grub, Epice, Table 3, The Southern, Etch, MCMH, Silo, and the list goes on. I personally like places where we can actually hear each other and where there aren't TVs.

"an emphasis on rotisserie cooking and locally sourced ingredients available for both dine-in and grab-and-go service."

So, rotisserie chickens from HG Hill around on Church served with locally grown french fries?

That's not in the bible, that's from Led Zeppelin...

Re: “We sent a dyed-in-the-wool progressive to the NRA convention. Here's what he saw.

"How they flew here in a plane, I will never know." --- You just shot your credibility in the foot! In essence, the TSA says your weapon(s) must be unloaded, packed in a locked hard-sided container, and declared to the airline at check-in.

"The NRA is in business to sell fear, plain and simple." --- And what do you call the propaganda being spread by Shannon Watts, Michael Bloomberg et al? On one hand they say "we need background checks, and training and [insert long list of requirements, here] to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people" and on the other hand [e.g. Tennessee] they scream "Now that you've MET our requirements, we don't want you carrying your weapon in Starbucks, or Kroger, or over here, or over there, 'cause that's just NUTS!"

Paying $25 and talking to a few people doesn't make you an "expert." The fact you have no idea how one gets their weapon to their destination via a commercial airline flight suggests you have a lot of homework ahead of you. Good luck!

Re: “We sent a dyed-in-the-wool progressive to the NRA convention. Here's what he saw.

FTA: "The cost of membership is low — one reason the rates of membership are high."

But they're not. This belief is the cause of the confusion and dissonance felt by those that impotently shake their fist at the sky at that which they don't understand.

Let's do the math. There are now well over 80,000,000 owners of personal firearms in America. They are in possession of now well over 300,000,000 firearms. The NRA has what...maybe...5M members?

That means there are 75+ Million gun owners that have nothing to do with the NRA. These people span all political affiliations, as well as all racial and gender demographics. They are hardly all 'wascawee-wepubwiccans". There are 10's of millions of Democrat gun owners, a group therefore that , in and of itself, dwarf the NRA.

Yes the NRA has influence and I suppose they 'buy lunch or cover the greens-fees' once in a while, but these gun owners are known to their legislators because they communicate, a lot, and more importantly they do the one thing the NRA does not do...they actually vote.

Re: “Weekly Open Thread — Food Issue Edition: Where Do You Like to Dine With Best Friends?

If you've a craving for Nawlins (because you've been or always wanted to), Holy Chow's Oyster PoBoy is the real deal--and it's packed with oysters fried to perfection--crispy and chewy at the same time/full of flavor. Try gumbo too! Not crowded, just right for an informal "Let's meet for lunch, buddy, (or girlfriend)" sort of place. Location is a trek for most (warehouse district by 100 Oaks) which means you don't have to deal with the "So good to see you, pull up a chair and join us" of a neighborhood joint. With a group, you can't beat The Pharmacy for burgers or wusrt, great selection of beers, or a phosphate; Dining in is ok, but out in the beer garden is for a picnic table full of best buds. The only downer is finding parking or having to wait; it's long past undiscovered.

Re: “What Other Books Could, Indeed, Be the Official State Books?

Instead of a state book what we need is a state bookie, though it's a good bet it'll never happen.

Re: “How a terrible worship song drove me from Christianity

Thanks Casey!... writer here too. This song is a favorite in many black-Hebrew churches and radio. I have a major problem with lyric, "incredible."

synonyms: unbelievable, beyond belief, hard to believe, unconvincing, far-fetched, implausible, improbable, highly unlikely, dubious, doubtful;

prefix "in" means "not"

Lyrics: "Incredible God, Incredible Praise"

[Verse: Soloist]
I've had some problems
some great and some small
You being God
delivered me from them all
Still can't believe
all the ways you've made
An incredible God deserves incredible praise

[Bridge: Chior w/ soloist]
He deserves,
[x3 and modulate]

Re: “In Speech, Register Sets Table for His Successor

Just so long as it isn't Steele. His tenure as head of instruction has been marked by mediocre ideas communicated abysmally. The King of "one size fits all" who was largely responsible for ignoring some great feedback in the multi-million dollar Tribal study. The "grading for learning" policies that had some merit but were so poorly communicated in the "day before school starts" email that still has untrained schools utterly confused. The lack of social studies texts or adequate support to provide alternative materials. "Here's a great idea. Do it but don't expect much communication about it."

Top down can work if there are efforts at respecting "the troops" and clear, organized communication. Steele's team provides neither.

Re: “#MayoralChatter: What All the Campaign Cash Means

Lots of consultant malpractice to go around. In the case of Fox, a few crafty republicans in Texas are getting rich on Fox. Which is a shame since he's only worth about $3m and he has $1.4m in this race. Curious see if he spends it all: or put another way, whether his kids will to go to UT or UVA.

Seems most consultants still think we're howdy doody (see: Bone's TV spot). Unfortunately, the willingness of our candidates to write these blank checks doesn't help the perception.

Re: “The Black Belles' Olivia Jean to Release Jack White-Produced Debut Solo LP Oct. 14

Wow, I am surprised to see that comments on this article have continued on for almost 8 months now. I'll wait for the day Jack White fires her and sends her 'leaching ass' packing before I will visit the TMR complex again. That is exactly how bad of a musician/singer/songwriter I think she there is her nasty personality which I won't expand on from my own personal experience from encounters with her. When someone is that ugly to you, you don't tend to forget those encounters.

Now that Jack White is cutting back on touring for a long period of time I sure hope he doesn't let this 'leaching ass' of a terrible human being continue to suck off of him while he is trying to spend time at home with his family. She seems to be very good at sucking off of him. I sure hope he wakes up and realizes that someday. If and when that someday comes I will be able to visit the TMR complex again without having to be concerned about running into her very nasty 'leaching ass' and having her being ugly to me again. She definitely has a lot of growing up and maturing to do and a hell of a lot of work to do to become a talented and respected musician/singer/songwriter...don't forsee that happening in my lifetime.

Good luck with getting rid of this 'white trash', Jack White.

Re: “#MayoralChatter: Election Commission to Ask Campaigns to Refund Runoff Cash [Updated]

This was a single-handed effort by Megan to limit the amount others would have because she knew she would get dwarfed. Must be nice to have friends in high places. Don't underestimate the ability to Megan and her people to go very ugly and very negative.

"Why are they prohibited from raising money for a runoff? Is that a state law? "

Good question.
