I grew up on Miracle Whip, and I still cherish the flavor I remember, with paprika and more vinegar tartness compared to mayo.
However, too many chemicals in that product. Not just sugar, but "spice" and "natural flavor," which could be any kind of flavor enhancer, including glutamates -- a headache trigger for me.
Generally I prefer Hellman's but doctored with lemon juice or extra vinegar. Maybe a shot of a good, grassy-flavored olive oil.
Just speaking from my own perspective but the "Nashville" set dressers and location scouts have been very kind to Grimey's. We've sold them thousands of records & CDs in bulk to dress sets. Several of the cast shop here and have brought friends in with them. I've talked to numerous tourists about how much they love the show. I've got a guy in Pennsylvania driving his dad's country record collection to Nashville to sell to me because he wants to sell his daddy's records to the store where Deacon shops (he read about us in a People magazine feature on where the 'Nashville' stars go in Nashville). So from where I sit the show has been berry berry good to me.
AnglRdr: Hell, most of the pretty boys and girls are b and c level "rock"stars! I find myself in the unenviable and quite distasteful case of agreeing with Donna. What passes for Country today, passed for poor pop in the past!
Dark; Deep; Brooding;Brilliant; A Measure of The Sin! A tale of how many decide that they must flee from all that they love while seeking only freedom from themselves. Powerful end of the rope drama! Raw and identifiable. Thank all for heart directed efforts against all economic odds with this all donated talent collaboration on the shoestring which successfully drew both nays and praise for this 16mm film on screen effort! Unashamed original artwork displayed in our faces! Touching childhood fears, soaring joys and unbelievable love with it's tenderful grace, we accept or reject our lives in others opinions or as the Hippies said "let it all hang out." Life is not always as simple as the Mona Lisa or as deep as Anonymous Irish poetry.
Thank you! We Soared!
Although I don't really care for this kind of nighttime soap opera, I will say one thing. The show makes Nashville look beautiful.
Never Forget the time Avery walked home from The Gulch to deep East Nashville. Before the Korean Veterans extension was open, even.
It's built now, so what is she supposed to say, "I hope it burns to the ground so we can salt the Earth whert it stood"?
Tobin, I _have_ to be brand-loyal to New Balance because they're the only ones who make my size (EEEEEE)!...
I grew up on Hellman's, and, if it's what your Mommy fed you when you were little, you've really kinda been imprinted on it like the famous baby geese who used to follow Konrad Lorenz around.
BUT!, I now have a jar of Duke's in the fridge. This is the second or third time I've tried it over a 2-yr period. It's not far in flavor from Hellman's; I had sort of put it in an either-or category. BUT, now that I know it doesn't include a sweetener, I'm very likely to keep getting it. I'll read both ingredients lists next time I run out. I will probably end up a convert like mike; it's already sunk its teeth into me....
I agree with Mark and Steve. This welfare for the rich doesn't seem to pay off. How long will it be before the Titans do another shakedown, and then pick up and leave if we don't deliver? Dell, as pointed out, was a disaster. I can't believe Spyridon and his bunch are willing to throw money at this.
To hell with them. "Nashville," as I understand it was on the bubble and only got a reprieve by the network. I suspect this wll be its last season anyway.
Can there be a spinoff where Juliettes ex-husband makes the Local Football Team really good to spite her and then can that also be real life? One of my hopes for season 2 is that they show one of the non-superstars manage to get home from the bars, without risking a DUI, that costs less than $30. Stabby strolls under an overpass? Reckless no-shoulder bike ride through green hills? Maybe some latenight creepin through Centennial? I'm tryin to pick up some tips and trixxxx
I'm not that impressed with Connie Britton or the show
Well, that to me shows a mature and responsible attitude. What would be better? That she says, "Well, I was opposed to this, so now I hope it fails and all these millions of dollars are down the drain?" No rational and responsible person would take that attitude. She lost in the council, but a true public servant (as opposed to a slef-absorbed hack) will take her approach. If it's going to happen, let's hope for the sake of Nashville that it is a big success.
If that's what it takes to get you through the night, son, sure; you hit a nerve...
Great piece! The good news.....after your children are gone, you can do all that again!
Which rock stars are you talking about, Donna?
What a joke. On Tennessee. I hope that ridiculous show leaves and takes the rock stars trying to go country with them. And most of the record-label moguls as well. Alan Jackson done said it in song.
I listen to a country station down this way that plays a mix of old and new. They've been having to throw in more and more of the old because people are tuning out the new 15-song rotations that have gotten worse by the year. Heaven help us all. Glad I remember the old AM stations and the music mixes I grew up with. Payola lives.
I switched to Duke's a few years ago but before that I was strictly Hellman's. I still like Hellman's a lot, there's just a tang in Duke's that I prefer. I also think Kraft is acceptable.
You're either a mayo or mustard person? I didn't know that. I'm a ketchup, yellow mustard, dijon mustard, horse radish mustard, honey mustard, hot mustard and mayo person.
It would be something if the state had some sort of organization, a commission, say, that was responsible for working as a liaison between the film industry and the state, in order to make mutually-beneficial deals to attract projects to the state.
Heather,
No one disputes that there are benefits. The question is two fold.
1) Do those benefits outweigh the costs and the establishment of the idea that we will pay for business we might get otherwise?
The worst economic deal in Tennessee history was when Mayor Bredesen offered Dell $80 million plus to locate in Nashville instead of eastern Wilson or eastern Rutherford counties. We ended up paying to get jobs that would have still benefited the region for free. It looked good in theory but was a disaster in reality.
2) Is there a longer term benefit that will come from our initial investment or will we need to continue bribing projects to come here?
I would be happier if Nashville and Tennessee were working with private industry and banks to make a long term concentrated program to become a film capitol. Such a project would look at attracting all the different sectors of the business, not just filming. We should be the perfect location for that with all the different types of talent and technology we have.
Tennessee can be used to film all sorts of different locations and Nashville is centrally located to be the focus of all the production and ancillary work.
Re: “The real drama at ABC's Nashville starts as the season stops”
From a purely practical viewpoint, if production of season 2 is to crank up in July, would the producers even have time to build sets and find locations in L.A. to make it happen there? Talk about spending too much money on overtime. Now that the sets are built and locations secured here in Nashville, wouldn't they be starting from scratch to re-create that infrastructure elsewhere (California or Georgia)? Maybe they'd have time to get all that in place to move production for a potential season 3 but I doubt they could pull it off in 6 weeks to begin shooting the 2nd season.
And I also heard Connie Britton was looking at houses in Nashville. I say they're staying here.
