Re: “Sarah Martin Kicks Off Run To Address District 5 'Divide'

Just to clarify: I was not stating that I have a desire for more affordable housing in our area. I was simply relaying what our councilman says about affordable housing while doing things that directly contradict it.

Our councilman's vision is all over the place- in fact I'd say he has double vision: he's helping developers change zoning to build unaffordable housing and then saying he wants more affordable housing. I do have a problem with these hypocritical actions.

Also, I do have a problem with greedy developers who build two houses on one lot, or three or in some cases four houses on one lot! I will continue to stand in opposition of this practice, yet our councilman stands beside them and walks them through the process with ease.

I moved here because it was where I could afford to live, and as I said before and I'll say again: I'm happy to have anyone as a neighbor (renter or owner) as long as they are respectful, law abiding members of the community.

Co-location and phase-in models are not good for kids.

Phasing into schools makes sense.

Re: “Barbic Frustrated His Former Charter is Pulling Out of Memphis

From the Chalkbeat article, showing the problem was more local than with ASD:

'But the nail in the coffin was when Shelby County Schools Superintendent Dorsey Hopson announced earlier this year that the district no longer would participate in co-locations – a model that YES Prep is built on – in which a charter school takes over a school grade by grade while the existing school district operates the remaining grades. Hopson said the model was unsustainable.

“The city doesn’t like the idea of phasing into schools,” explained Bill Durbin, the superintendent of YES Prep’s Memphis initiative.

Re: “Sarah Martin Kicks Off Run To Address District 5 'Divide'

While no one could possibly disagree with a person who says he wants his neighborhood to be "better" or "safer," it's a little bit hard to read this article without sensing that those terms are, at least to some degree, euphemisms for something disturbingly demographic and socio-economic. At this particular point in the city's history, I don't see how anyone could honestly believe that we do not have a problem of too little affordable housing. So for someone to knowingly move into a part of town substantially populated by lower-income residents, then complain that his/her Councilman's "vision for the neighborhood" is not in line with that of the neighbors because that Councilman believes that there isn't enough affordable housing, should send up red flags. I live in a neighboring district, so I don't have a direct dog in the hunt, and to be clear - I'm not trying to tie that observation to Sarah Martin or her campaign. But just listening to the conversation unfold in District 5, there seems to be a rather insidious undercurrent beneath some of the code words.

Re: “Clemmons Is Lone Ranger in Today's Abortion Debate on the Hill

"Men who think this about women need to be punched in the throat."

Not that I'm advocating violence, but I understand and sympathize with this sentiment. It's a gross insult to a woman's intelligence and ability to choose what is best for her. Imagine if some female legislator tried to use that same legal argument on men (particularly men who are divorced or separated) who want to purchase a gun at a gun show. The gun lobby would have duck fit.

Re: “Clemmons Is Lone Ranger in Today's Abortion Debate on the Hill

@localboy If someone experienced "adverse consequences" after visiting any facility, whether it's a licensed ASTC or a private practice that does not fall under the criteria of an ASTC, the patient can and should report the practicing physician.

Re: “Clemmons Is Lone Ranger in Today's Abortion Debate on the Hill

"Dan, how many women have experienced adverse consequences from having an abortion at any clinic in Tennessee? Don't you think it would be a good idea for someone to provide that information prior to requiring additional regulations or licensing? Absent that information, no one can claim that this is about safety."
Ever tried to get data about licensed providers/facilities from DOH? No? Well, since the collection procedures are limited and the process opaque, imagine getting useful data about unlicensed clinics. Nobody's quoting real live data because accurate information isn't publicly available, only annecdotal seems to be in full supply.

Re: “D'Angelo, Kacey Musgraves and Songhoy Blues Added to Bonnaroo Lineup

This is excellent news! The wife is over the moon about seeing Kacey (and Courtney Barnett) and I'm ecstatic about the addition of Songhoy Blues. They do an amazing cover of "Kashmir" on the CD accompanying the new Mojo Magazine (it's played for Jimmy Page in the interview inside and he claims it's among the best Zep covers he's ever heard) and I've been hearing about them blowing away folks at SXSW. I actually went to look at the Bonnaroo lineup on Monday, to see if they were playing (since I might not have recognized their name prior to learning who they were) and was disappointed to see they weren't included. And then today I log onto the Cream et voila!

Oh and I'm sure D'Angelo will be excellent as well.

Re: “#MayoralChatter: Megan Barry Leads Banner's Power Poll

Also interesting - Even though Dobie is a super duper fan boy for Kane and has been propping up Just Jeremy's candidacy since early-2014, he can't even muster to spin the results in any sort of positive way for Kane. Bad sign. Also, further evidence that the Notorious L.E.R. is toast.....

Re: “Phil Valentine's An Inconsistent Truth No. 1 Movie in America by Per-Screen Average

Iv been around for 60 years. The summer is hot the winter is cold some year's more so then others, one way or the other. That being said it's been that way all my life just minor changes one way or the other, nothing drastic. The real problem that no one wants to talk about is pollution but then there's no money in it. Al Gore has made tons of money with his "Global Warming" later to be changed to "Climate Change" maybe it would be a good idea to ask yourself why did they feel the need to do this. Maybe because the data would not hold up, hmmm. Man is ruining this earth but global warming or climate change is the least of our problems. The real problem is these money hungry greedy bureaucrats weather they call them selves Democrats or Republicans as well as all you self serving consumers only worried about yourself. How many of you can point a finger at yourself, hmm. Can you be that honest and are you willing to change. Without the consumers support these money hungry bureaucrats can't make money. So are you part of the solution or as you've been part of the problem? Got the guts to ask yourself and be honest.

Re: “Clemmons Is Lone Ranger in Today's Abortion Debate on the Hill

@notguilty I don't know how frequently the TN Gen Assembly updates the online bill descriptions (since the language often changes as they move through the subcommittees and beyond), but you can watch the video from the House Health Subcommittee meeting here: http://tnga.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?v…

Williams announces HB0977 around 52:40, so you can watch Hill describe the details himself. You can also listen to the debate between Hill and Clemmons (and, later, Lynn and Clemmons).
